First impressions are peculiar things. They can be spot on or perfectly inaccurate. When Margarete Woermann greets one at the front door to her graceful period home, flanked on either side by her large dogs and constant companions, Lenghi and Lunah, the words that most strongly come to mind are “farmstead”, “eccentric” and “bohemian”. As it turns out, these are all wholly accurate. Margarete was born and raised in an insulated rural farming community to a German-immigrant family. Later, thanks to a strong artistic ability, a series of fortuitous twists and turns, a distinctive eye and unrelenting determination, she went on to establish herself as one of the best-known names on the South African design landscape. Long unused, the shepherd’s hut lies within the private nature reserve De Aap. Once known to locals as Blou Piet, it has been around since the 1820s. Only the outer walls remained standing; the roof long gone. At the start of the major restoration project, materials found on the farm – like the red earth and invasive black wattle wood – were used to rebuild the thick clay walls. The roof was replaced, and the ceilings feature the typical Karoo slatted design made from Spanish reed. The house was rebuilt identically to the original plan, except for an interior wall that was knocked down to create a large open-plan space, and another bathroom was added. The soul of this very unique artists’ property is undoubtedly the studio that forms part of their interesting house. Around the studio are some of the oldest stones on earth, and every day the mountain looks different. The building is almost a sculpture itself; some walls have been clad with granite offcuts and each block has been hand-engraved. Local architect Pieter Mathews (maaa.co.za) designed the house and the owner, a sculptor, built it himself. Pieter acknowledges that he drew inspiration from the environment as well as from the artists’ work. It was this symbiosis that created a harmonious end result. The once neglected old Karoo house has now been beautifully restored, nestled among five tall eucalyptus trees with a view of the vineyards and orchards. Inside the house, visitors are welcomed by a rural charm that connects with the tranquillity of the environment. The original part of the farmhouse dates back to 1880 and the challenge was to restore this part to its full glory. Although an ugly duckling at first glance, there was a lot of potential. Renovations and building included the restoration of the high wooden ceilings, the stoep with its original broekielace was enlarged, and the three bedrooms each received an en-suite bathroom. On the remote farm close to a nature reserve, you’ll experience a combination of quiet luxury with touches of colour and sustainable design. In their search for a place with unspoilt nature the owners came across this 110-hectare farm between Montagu and Barrydale and fell in love with it. The house originated from a granny flat, which was once an outside building of a house on a large plot of land. The plot was later subdivided and the cottage is now cosily hidden in a panhandle, where it disappears into the lush garden. It feels as if you live in the countryside in the middle of the city. One Saturday morning Christian van der Walt and Anli Jones were browsing an antique store in Parktown North near the cottage into which they had recently moved. A place with brick walls painted yellow, avocado green bathrooms and a yellowed pine ceiling. An antique château door caught their attention. After decades of minimalism dominance, everything has been stylishly curated in this house in Philadelphia where more is better. “The project was more of a resurrection than a restoration,” says Dapper de Wet of his beautiful farmhouse that dates back to 1860. The flat-roofed house in typical Karoo building style, complete with a deep stoep and broekielace, sits on the outskirts of the village under the watchful eye of the Compassberg. More than 100 years old, neatly whitewashed, with traditional wooden shutters, cacti by the roadside and pots with aloes on either side of the front door, the house has an almost modest facade. Near the outskirts of Prince Albert, you’ll find a typical Karoo home on a smallholding. On one side, there’s a small orchard of fruit trees, and on the other end, a paddock where Angora goats graze peacefully. The house on the property, one of the last ones outside the village that had remained intact, stood empty for many years. Once a subsistence farm, the place became dilapidated. The few renovations that had been done were unaesthetic and substandard. The road leading to the charming cottage winds through the West Coast National Park. It is secluded and stands ever so resolutely near the sandy point of a small bay in Schrywershoek, only a stone’s throw from Churchhaven. In 1960 Theodore Wiehahn bought the coastal farm Schrywershoek with the exact wooden cottage, which then had a blue roof. In 2020 the present owners took on the huge task of renovating the house, a known landmark in the area, from floor to ceiling. The whole house – outside, inside, the roof and even the deck – was painted white to create a brand new and fresh look. The patch of land on which the three old lumberer’s cabins stand is a romantic paradise. It’s almost impossible to take in all the beauty at once; a feast of colour, sound and flavour wherever you turn. Colourful carpets, floral cushions, William Morris wallpaper and freshly picked flowers adorn the characterful rooms. Every piece of furniture, painting and rug have been thoughtfully selected to make these homes truly special. The larger cottage is called Sylvan and its décor is inspired by the indigenous forest next to the property. The name Sylvan fittingly refers to the peace and calm evoked by a shady, wooded place. From both the exterior and interior of this home, it is clear that respect for the environment has prevailed in the design. Wood, stone and every useful item already on the farm were used to keep the carbon footprint as small as possible. The house and outside buildings had once been inhabited, but were neither attractive nor had architectural value. The challenge was how they could be reused and rebuilt. Intensely aware of the environmental impact a building project can have, especially given the primeval history of the location, architect Lee de Wit’s (anti-object.com) first thought wasn’t how the place should look. One of Tulbagh’s oldest buildings is the Kloosterskool, built in 1797. With its gables, thick whitewashed clay walls, wooden rafters and thatched roof, the property has the typical characteristics of the old Cape Winelands architecture. No longer a convent, it’s now an extraordinary sanctuary with a yoga studio. In more recent years, the famed artist Christo Coetzee lived here. In the 1970s he came to Tulbagh to look for freedom and found contentment in simplicity, restraint and humility, says the current owner: “I think he also had a good time and enjoyed his life here.” After his death in 2000, some of the rooms were converted into a gallery to celebrate his life and work. The massive volume of the house, filled with light and plants, melts into the green heart of the Highveld. The large 35-hectare property with a landscape full of subtle colours and plays of light was the ideal inspiration for a modern interpretation of the traditional Karoo farmhouse vernacular. The architect started off with the archetypal child’s drawing of a house: a pointed roof, a door, and windows. The end result was a steel and glass facade, open concrete beams and standard bricks, which were later coated with a cement slurry. At the centre of the home is a double-volume stoep-conservatory in glass and steel.
