Mainly for my own amusement, I spend a lot of time observing everyday situations, people’s behaviour and reactions. Footwear has always been a problem for scooterists. We all know that a pair of loafers won’t protect in the event of an off, but neither does anyone want to look like Darth Vader at the club meet. Having graduated through the ranks of becoming a mod during our school days, they would continue in the same form once we had left. The early 1980s was a good time to be involved and there was quite a big group of us by this time. Once into the real world of getting a job and having to work for a living, the reward of money was very welcome. This was easily the biggest ever Lambretta Day yet, with nearly 500 scooters on the Sunday. It started out with a meet-up and music on the Saturday, great scooters and fantastic atmosphere, some top DJs and bands, such as Ska’d for Life and Subculture. A great night followed at The Balcony Bars with Who’s Who and The Jam’d, both playing amazing sets. Come Sunday morning, scooters and riders started meeting up at The Riverside from 11am and it was soon evident that it was going to be a big turn-out as the scooters poured in from around the country. Being general secretary of the LCGB was a huge task, even during the years of leaner membership numbers. Not only would that role include the organisation of the daily running of the club, but also sorting out all the problems that it threw up. Sometimes this was on a constant basis. Jim Stretton had been an avid scooterist and Lambretta owner throughout the entire 1960s. Despite owning several different models towards the latter end of the decade he had settled for the very reliable SX 150. The one he owned was used on a daily basis and had become his pride and joy. So to him, it was a devastating blow when hearing the news that it had been stolen. These days when it comes to the Lambretta clutch there are a whole host of options available to choose from, being one of the most developed parts of the engine in the last decade. This is fine if you are fitting an upgraded one into a tuned engine, but there are still many Lambrettas running around on traditional four-plate clutches. Making sure it is working perfectly is an important aspect of the engine’s overall reliability. If regularly serviced, it will last a much longer. The idea was born when Lincoln Business Improvement Group (BIG) wanted to do something to complement the LCGB Lincoln Rally about 10 years ago. Many people claim to have ‘got the t-shirt', but few can claim to have been on one... Not content with the success of his Shipley site, Len opened two other shops, notably on Kirkstall Road in Leeds. Early one morning in 1969, a young Mod called Dennis Cronin was waiting for the shop to open when he was approached by a man with a camera. “He asked if he could take my photo and I agreed,” said Dennis. “He took quite a few actually, but I never thought anything more of it until my son rang me a couple of years ago and told me I was on the local news.” The man with the camera was Eric Jaquier, a then 22-year-old young man and now an internationally renowned photographer.…

The offence is one that became widespread in the middle of 1983 when the British learner rider laws changed, taking the maximum engine size that could be ridden on L plates down from 250 to 125cc. This meant that the AF Rayspeed Super S-Type Lambretta was no longer a learner-legal machine, and we were all suddenly restricted to underpowered, gutless commuter scooters. He’s also a full-time martial arts instructor and trained in America with Larry Hartsell, one of Bruce Lee’s students and a twice decorated Vietnam veteran.
