When first introduced, the scooter made a quick impact as it mobilised nations across Europe after the Second World War. The main reason was its cheap price and affordability at a time when income was low but not forgetting also its practicality. It was aimed at everyone being able to ride one, hence the step-through design but its low-powered engine was possibly seen as a slight drawback. The adverts at the time promoted the scooter as ideal for local commuting and to start with the pub I ic saw it fit for that purpose and nothing else. Every time you go out on your scooter all the components are being subject to a mechanical force which over time creates wear. Each individual part is designed to cope with such forces, but they can't last forever. Servicing is a requirement to make sure everything is working perfectly and should be replaced when necessary . Teesside endurance event aside, BSSO racing still continued this month for our rookie racer Phil Hallam, with Croft being the venue. From the beginninghe , said it would be a steep learning curve and this track proved to be just that. Part of the reason may have been down to such a successful race first time out which can't always be replicated at the next one. What made it more difficult was not being able to get any practice in, qualifying being the first chance to get out on track. Understandably this made the challenge far more difficult and it was no surprise for him when he found himself at the back of the grid. We left Cambridge to catch the ferry to the Isle of Wight from Lymington to Yarmouth, our preferred crossing, on the Thursday. Just to be going somewhere at last was a relief after many months of lockdown and taking extra precautions as Johnny has been on the 'at risk' register which has meant we have not been out much, though we had kept ourselves and others going playing vinyl on our Scoots and Soul Facebook timeline. A picture on social media recently reminded me of a really special day of scooter sprinting at Elvington. It was the occasion when I'd bought back my race scooter some 18 years after selling it. I'd rebuilt it and was running it at Elvington just for old time's sake. My dad, Bill, had done loads of work on it including making a hydraulic disc slave cylinder from a piece of solid brass and a 28-section superbly welded exhaust system. I like to keep things in order and matching, (otherwise it plays havoc with my OCD), so as well as the tyres, a new full set of BGM rims and tubes would also be required; these have been around for a few years now already and have both proven to be excellent quality. Regarding my preferred rubber, personally I'm a lover of the classic Michelin S83 tyre and have run on these for many a thousand mile without an issue . The Vespa smallframe first appeared In 1963; It was the last machine to be designed by the Plagglo lngegnere ( engineer) Corradino D' Ascanlo, the 'father of the Vespa'. Piaggio pitched this new Vespa at the younger market as it was light and manageable and could also be ridden legally in Italy at the age of 14 without the requirement for a registration plate , or even the need for a driving licence . A TRIBUTE TO KES Dear Mau, I have enclosed some views of fairly recently acquired Douglas Vespa 150 of 1976 manufacture. It was acquired as a swap for a 125 Yamaha. The artwork/paint job is superb to say the least and I have a good provenance of the work . The main theme is the film Kes - the story of the turbulent early childhood of a young boy named Billy Casper. He finds and trains a kestrel and flies him as an escape from the drudgery prevalent in the industrial north of England.
