Having followed the instructions in last month’s magazine you should have already changed the oil, fitted new filters and are now looking at your GTS with the air filter box open. If not, back issues are available…. Start by removing the three screws which hold the inside of the airbox to the engine and lift it clear of the casing. Don’t be afraid to use an impact screwdriver if the fasteners won’t come clear. It’s a better option than shredding the screw heads! The next step is to slacken the clutch bell housing. My question was and is: why should we have to take a CBT to put a learner plate on a 125cc scooter/motorcycle. For anyone who wasn’t paying attention at the back I’ll quickly explain the story so far; if you were with us for the first instalment feel free to skip past this section. It was way back in 2016 that my PX started fighting back, a series of holed pistons were eventually traced to a faulty fuel tap that would, without warning, reduce the fuel supply to a trickle, leaning out the mixture with catastrophic results. During the rebuild a Polini 210 kit was fitted. This was a simple bolt-on affair. Gearing was altered by changing to a 24-tooth primary, and a larger carb together with a Polini exhaust were fitted. I really enjoy the Scooter World show at Newark and was seriously looking forward to attending and being part of it again this year, with a positive outlook and hope that we could get out there for real this time. Whether it’s Roman Holiday, Quadrophenia or documentary footage of scooter sport, both male and female scooterists can always be seen. However, more often than not, those riding them are men. (Roman Holiday is a notable exception to that rule.) With a few notable exceptions, women are typically portrayed as the passenger. Before anyone gets angry I know that isn’t the full picture. Back in the 1950s, many women did have their own scooters and for them, it was a way of transport. That was one of the main selling points of the motor scooter. Now that all clothing sold as riding gear has to be tested and marked for its suitability, checking how much protection it’ll provide in the event of an ‘off’ has never been easier. However, aside from looking at armour pockets and checking the strength of textiles it’s important that any item of clothing fits well, and in case you’ve not noticed, ladies and gents are built differently. Where do you look when you’re riding? The road ahead? The vehicle ahead? The other riders in your group? Vision is a fundamental part of riding a motorcycle. It’s a basic riding skill that is often overlooked in favour of the more exciting aspects of riding we all enjoy practising (such as winding on the throttle). Out on track we have one main goal: ride as fast and as safely as possible. What prompted the move to Europe? A riding accident in 2009 left me unable to walk for almost a year. Four years and seven operations later, my job offered me an early retirement package that I couldn’t turn down. With no job and no place to live, I set off to start a new life. It was during the early 1980s that Lisa Samuels developed her obsession with scooters and very specifically the metal-flake spray jobs of that era. Onlyscooter opened its doors in Garcia, the most cosmopolitan area of Barcelona in 2011, during the biggest economic crisis in Spain. The shop’s existence was the result of a dream, made by a scooterist and given to all scooterists. Onlyscooter was a vintage-style shop, with 60s furniture and vintage decoration, housing Vespa, Lambretta, Montessa and Bultaco, 60s clothes, scooter spare parts, music and most importantly, it was a vintage scooter and motorcycle repair shop. Although you may not realise it yet, the latest round of price hikes could have far-reaching repercussions for every scooterist. Over the past few weeks, we’ve heard whispers that event organisers are being hit in all directions with price increases for hiring venues, bands, DJs, etc., plus all the ancillary services that go with them – and these are not just little price hikes either – they’ve even doubled in some cases. Paul Carter from Leeds, West Yorkshire, was featured in Classic Scooterist back in 2016 on what was then his newly finished dream scooter, the wonderful Lambretta TV175 Series 2. Paul had always wanted to own a second series TV and had been collecting parts for the planned project for a while. Finally, in 2012, Paul managed to find a frame, complete with a lot of very rusty bodywork in need of a full restoration and the process of building the scooter from the ground up out of boxes of bits began.
