The FBHVC represents more than 500 clubs, museums and individuals passionate about historic vehicles that are more than 30 years old. Due to changing political and environmental influences, the FBHVC believes that the freedom for historic vehicles to use the roads and even the fuel they use are under threat. The first FBHVC research was conducted in 1997 and has been repeated roughly every five years since then. The research is valued by the Government as it provides a consistent approach to gathering information about the UK’s historic vehicle movement. Such transparency fosters trust in the research, which is used in the development of government policy around the 1.9 million historic vehicles that are currently registered with the DVLA. There’s always something interesting rolling (or being pushed) into the garage; this month was no different and kicked off with a lovely example of a 1954 Model F Lambretta in what looked like largely untouched, original condition. We don’t see many of these through the doors, and to be honest, I had to double-take when I saw it being wheeled in. Finished in what appeared to be the original paint, complete with its fair share of age-related patina, the little 125cc F-model had all the hallmarks of a true survivor. We get so used to working on Series 1-3 machines or GP/DL models that when something pre-’57 turns up, it feels like opening a time capsule. Last month we rolled up our sleeves and took the first real tuning step with our humble PX200 dyno donkey project by widening the exhaust port on the standard cast-iron cylinder and seeing what results we could achieve from just that one modification. True to our mission of tracking every step individually, we didn’t rush ahead with a pile of changes; instead, we focused purely on the exhaust port shape and size, then rebuilt the top end to factory spec to allow for an isolated, accurate dyno test. Most of us who joined the scooter ranks in the early 1980s did so by way of a full-frame machine. Perhaps new if it were a Vespa, and second-hand if it were a Lambretta, usually one of Italian origin. As time would go by, we would customise them in one way or another, a practice almost impossible not to participate in. Bolting mirrors and lights on to them, painting them a different colour, you name it; everyone did the same. It was part of the individualism that came with it all, perhaps a legacy left over from our Mod ethics. This fashion exhibition, The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style, focuses on the years 1958 to 1966, considering the influences on Mod look, its impact on youth culture and the enduring appeal of Mod style. Back in 2016 my brother-in-law, Kevin Milford, decided to start a local scooter club so we launched a Facebook page for the club, announced an intention to meet up every third Sunday of the month and waited to see if there was any interest locally. The first meeting wasn’t too exciting as just me and Kevin turned up! However, the club began to grow and like-minded local people that owned or had an interest in scooters soon started to attend our meetings. The format is very simple; we have breakfast and a chat followed by a rideout to somewhere local in the Bristol area. Last month we laid the groundwork for the engine rebuild by preparing the cases and carefully installing all the main bearings and oil seals. With that first stage completed, we now have a solid foundation on which to continue the reassembly process. From this point, the rebuild starts to gather momentum as we start fitting moving parts back into place and seeing the engine take shape. This month’s focus is on installing and correctly shimming the gearbox and then fitting the new crankshaft and mag housing assembly. We’ll be using the brand-new 58/110mm BGM crankshaft selected during the planning phase. The early 1980s became a golden era for scooter customisation. Italian Stallion had wowed us all, and Dazzle had blown the rest of the opposition away. So intense was the competition that new machines weren’t just appearing every month, but every single week. In last month’s feature, we fitted and tested the BGM SuperTorque converter; a significant upgrade that transformed the way our GTS300 HPE delivered its power, ironing out any lag and sharpening the transmission response across the entire rev range. Bryn grew up on the family farm in Langham near Oakham, Rutland, where with his brothers and his mates he spent time riding motorbikes. His first scooter was a Vespa 90 which he also used to ride around the fields.
