Occasionally, venues that have a reputation for being hard can spring a few surprises and make an average session into something rather special. This was most certainly the case when I tackled the Warren Edge section at Southbourne. WHAT GOT ME INTO LURE fishing was my desire to catch bass, but I mostly ended up catching wrasse, typically by bumping Savage Gear sandeels along the bottom, and I found I enjoyed the experience. After reading up and watching videos on the subject, I bought the essentials for specifically targeting the species, in the form of 10g and 7g cone weights, some worm hooks in size 3/0 and various soft plastics. At first I just bought a selection of different coloured Senkos but, to be honest, I don’t think there’s a soft plastic lure that a wrasse will not hit at some stage in its career. WHAT IS IT? An algal bloom is caused by a rapid increase or accumulation in the population of algae in either freshwater or seawater. Usually recognised by discoloration in the water due to its pigments, the bloom can injure animals or the ecology. Called Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB), these can lead to fish mortality or areas being closed to fishing. Red Tide is the term often used to describe an HAB in marine coastal areas, but this is misleading since algal blooms can be a wide variety of colours, and the growth of algae is unrelated to the tides. I reviewed my first fishing boat almost 30 years ago, and I couldn’t tell you just how many different makes, models and types of craft that I have trialed for various magazines since then. Interspersed with the more usual types of boat we are all familiar with, I have looked at several packable, collapsible mini boats, which have been designed for, among other applications, angling. HAVING ALWAYS WANTED TO catch a big bluefin tuna, I arranged a trip to Nova Scotia in Canada, where the season runs from September to November, so I booked the last two weeks in October 2016. FISH WAS A MYSTERY I had an unusual experience in December while night fishing for cod with large worm baits on Pennell pulley rigs at the Blackrock beach area of Brighton. I had a gentle lift bite, so I struck and all hell broke loose. I was dragged down the shingle before everything locked up. I eased the pressure, but the line came away at nowhere near its 30lb breaking strain; I lost six rigs. I reported this in the local tackle shop, where it was suggested this was a conger bite, yet the local commercial fishermen claim there are no congers in this area. KENT, IN PARTICULAR AROUND Hythe, has generally been recognised as a place to enjoy shore fishing from the relative comfort of a shingle bank. Such venues provide good access where it’s easy to position a brolly or beach shelter, and make a base camp high above the water without having to continually move with the tide. There aren’t, however, many concrete promenades to choose from. Having said that, there is Samphire Hoe. A concrete structure that was manufactured from spoil, generated during the construction of the Channel Tunnel. It’s a venue not recommended, though, for anyone who despises losing tackle. WHERE Well, you could decide to go to a stretch of coast where other anglers have been catching fish. What you would find is that, these days, bass are landed pretty well everywhere from the Borders round the east, south and west coasts up to the rugged western shores of Scotland. There will, of course, be known hotspots, but these will not be the only ones where the fish are present. Go back to basics and choose a section of the coastline where there is mixed or rocky ground and a fair amount of water movement – the bass will probably be there. THE SMOOTHHOUND’S SLEEK , shark-like shape and a ravenous appetite make it an excellent target for any angler looking for fast and furious action. They are a warm-water fish and have often only been associated with the southern half of the country. However, this is not the case, as many Scottish anglers will tell you that they target smoothhounds on a regular basis. There are good fish to be had in these northernmost waters, but, on the whole, they tend to be smaller, often below double figures. PADSTOW IS LOCATED ON THE WEST bank of the Camel Estuary about five miles from Wadebridge. Extending across the mouth of the estuary is a sandbar, which was a hazard to ships carrying cargo, often referred to as the ‘Doom Bar’. An ebb spring tide against an onshore wind causes the waves to rise up fiercely over the bar. For sailing ships trying to get up the estuary during a storm, it was a particular problem, as the height of the cliffs took the wind from their sails, and they would founder on the bar. UNDERSIZE FISH SCANDAL I’ve been sea fishing for about four years and enjoy the sport the same as when I started coarse fishing at seven years old. Several times when fishing on the Holderness coast I’ve seen people with bin bags with 30 or more fish that are undersized, mainly whiting and bass, which is wrong. They have water bailiffs for coarse fishing checking for licences, poachers and taking of undersized fish, so why can’t we have something like that on our coasts to stop this scandal happening and to save the fish stocks? “Thornbacks and conger eels can be taken on fish baits during settled conditions” YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT a seawall with a promenade several miles long would attract much interest from those who choose to fish the Bristol Channel. Yet this is not the case, because, for whatever reason, this often-prolific stretch of Somerset coastline is largely overlooked. Although the mark in question is known as Kingston Seymour, or simply Kingston, this is actually the name of the village where the main access point is located, and this seawall, constructed as a flood defence, actually runs from Wick St Lawrence in the south all the way to Clevedon, more than three miles away. YOU MIGHT POSSESS THE BEST rods, spinning reels, and various lures around, but if you go fishing and end up wet and cold, then there is no possible way you can use this probably expensive gear to its full potential. Ultimately, that is going to mean you catch fewer fish. THE BEST MULTIPLIER REEL I EVER owned lasted about a month. In the hope of turning a 1969 Mitchell 602AP into a bass reel, I had shortened the frame crossbars and hacked a chunk out of the spool and spindle. Just over a thumb’s width wide, the narrow spool ran beautifully with 3oz of lead weight, retaining the original 602AP’s retrieve speed and decent drag. ONE DAY during May last year I drove down to Dorset for a day’s charter fishing out of Weymouth with my good friend Colin Penny on his boat Flamer IV. FLORIDA IS PROBABLY THE MOST popular long-haul destination visited by British sea anglers. The fishing throughout ‘The Sunshine State’ is excellent, with the area around Islamorada in the Middle Keys known as being the ‘sport fishing capital of the world’. CLASSICALLY, THE TIME TO CATCH bass on lures is during the summer as seawater warms on its way to an autumnal peak. Should this always be the case, though? The fact is, bass are just as catchable on a lure today as they will be in late October. I would argue that the only difference between chucking lures now and in the winter or spring is that you are probably hunting fewer fish, and you should be considering the lure method that you are fishing.
