My most important make to date has to be the Everyday Hugs Cardigan. It was the first cardigan I ever designed, and the research I did to get the shaping and structure right started an unexpected obsession with understanding crochet garment design, and a passion for demystifying the process for others. I started the design for this piece with the intention of creating a really comfy, really wearable, really cosy cardigan. Most crochet patterns state the tension required, in rows and stitches of a specific type. Make a swatch at least 15cm square and check that your tension matches. Place a ruler across the swatch and insert two pins, 10cm apart. Then place the ruler along a column of stitches and insert two pins 10cm apart. Count the stitches and rows between the pins – if you have less than the pattern, your tension is too loose so you need to use a smaller hook, but if you have too many, use a larger hook. How did you get started as a crochet designer? Ever since I taught myself to crochet, I have been too impatient to follow patterns, and would just wing it. It was often very unsuccessful, but it was a great way to learn about how designs work (or don’t!).
