Knowing where to work the first stitch of a new row isn’t always as simple as you might think. Usually that’s because of ‘turning chains’. Understanding how turning chains work is vital for ensuring you work the first stitch of new rows in exactly the right place. A turning chain (abbreviated as t-ch) is a nifty way of raising the hook up to the right height for the stitches you’re going to work. A short stitch needs a small t-ch – for double crochet you only need to make one chain. A longer stitch needs a longer t-ch – for treble crochet fabric you need three chains to get up to the right height. There’s an aspect of turning chains that can be confusing, though. Nana and Mum taught me to crochet and knit as a small child, but it wasn’t until I was pregnant with my eldest that I picked up a crochet hook to make something purposeful. Most crochet patterns state the tension required, in rows and stitches of a specific type. Make a swatch at least 15cm square and check that your tension matches. Place a ruler across the swatch and insert two pins, 10cm apart. Then place the ruler along a column of stitches and insert two pins 10cm apart. Count the stitches and rows between the pins – if you have less than the pattern, your tension is too loose so you need to use a smaller hook, but if you have too many, use a larger hook.
