I’m Lily, and I’ve been teaching yarncrafts internationally since 1989. I was named to the Crochet Hall of Fame in 2015 and have been involved in some aspect of the fashion industry since age 13, designing for magazines and yarn companies since 1982 and working for designers such as Ralph Lauren and Diane von Fürstenberg. In Souvenirs of the Wasteland, crochet artist Caitlin McCormack imagines a future where humans, plants and the waste we’ve left behind all merge into tranquil yet terrifying new lifeforms. Mushrooms grow out of finger-like tendrils, animal bones lie on a toxic-waste yellow background and a faceless figure covered in leaves looms ominously. McCormack developed the exhibit with mixed-media artist Katharine Ryals, and their pieces went on display at the Upstate Art Weekend in Newburgh, New York in the US. “We hope that people leave the exhibition with a different kind of understanding of their imprint on this earth,” says Caitlin.
