TAKE A BREAK I was knitting a baby blanket and getting a bit fed up. There were so many stitches on each row and the lace pattern was giving me a headache. A friend suggested I take a break, put it to one side and knit something small and easy. Self-proclaimed bookworm, dog person and feminist, Jolie McCarty always makes room in her life for a new knitting challenge – even while earning a degree and getting married. “I recently graduated with a master’s degree in history, from New York University,” says Jolie. “My then-fiancé, now husband, and I were apart during our studies. INTARSIA INTRIGUE Q What does it mean when a pattern says to ‘make bobbins’ for intarsia knitting? How do I actually do that?
