STAR LETTER BLOOMING LOVELY I love making my own projects using your patterns. I recently spent nine months making a pregnancy blanket for my sister. I took the idea from a temperature blanket, assigning colours to temperatures and knitting one row a day accordingly. I thought the idea would help me stay connected to my sister throughout her pregnancy as we live 200 miles apart. We assigned colours to moods. If she felt hormonal we chose lavender, if she felt nauseous we chose grey and a lovely blue for content days. I used the Lace and Blooms pattern by Nicola Valiji (issues 198 to 201). GUEST EXPERT Flexible DPNs are my favourite way to knit small circumferences. They come in sets of three, and they are essentially DPNs with a flexible centre. The shortest I've found are 12.5cm (5in), and the longest 30cm (12in). Needle management with these is easy, because you don't have to pull the needles through so stitches sit on the cable. Tension on the joins is minimal too, and only happens in two places, compared to four with DPNs. Here's how it's done… 1 Cast all stitches onto one needle and transfer half the stitches to a second needle by slipping them purlwise. 2 Pick up the needle with the yarn tail, and bring the working yarn into position.
