Mike Aspinall was just a teenager when he got his first sewing machine. A birthday gift from his parents, the then-school student was thrilled to finally have the chance to take his crafting to the next level. ONCE YOU HAVE FINISHED stitching your seam, it’s best to press it open on the wrong side so it lies flat. Sometimes it’s better to press it to one side to reduce bulk but the pattern instructions will tell you this. Usually the seam allowances are left as they are as they help to strengthen the seam, but sometimes they cause too much bulk so they are trimmed to half their original width. If your fabric has a tendency to fray you should neaten the raw edges after you have worked the seam. There are several ways of doing this. To machine-finish them, set your sewing machine to the zigzag stitch then stitch close to the raw edge all the way along. The zigzag must be small enough to stop…

Make a maxi or mini version of this dress. You could also make a summer top using the same method. Add tiers or ruffles to the bottom hem for an extra design detail that adds length to your dress. If you’re struggling to find an ergonomic sewing tool that suits your needs, you could adapt a tool that you already own. For example, you can use a hard-setting plasticine like Sugru to make your own custom handle. There are plenty of non-sewing-specific tools that can make our dressmaking tools easier to use. For example, pop sockets that you use on the back of your phone work brilliantly on large sewing rulers to help you pick them up and move them around. The sizes do vary greatly from pattern to pattern, so it’s always best to measure yourself accurately and then refer to the pattern’s size chart to find your size. The chart will usually be printed on the pattern envelope or on the instructions inside. Measure yourself in your underwear and preferably in the bra you’ll be wearing underneath your garment as this can alter the measurements slightly. “A waistcoat was one of the first garments I ever learnt to sew; I was frustrated that I couldn’t find any that came close to fitting my body type in the shops. Since then, I’ve made many, many more and have become a bit addicted! Each time my fitting and sewing techniques have become a bit more polished and refined. This particular waistcoat I made for a summer wedding, so I wanted to take my time and make it extra special. I used the Belvedere Waistcoat pattern from Thread Theory Designs with a lightweight grey worsted wool fabric from Fabworks Online.
