Fairly late into the pandemic, I started sewing garments. In fact, when I decided to upgrade my sewing machine, I bought a new one from someone who bought it at the beginning of the pandemic and never used it. When I started sewing, I had been diagnosed as having ADHD for a few years, a condition that isn’t about (or isn’t only about) being a hyperactive young boy. The diagnosis, and understanding how ADHD manifests differently in girls/women than it does in boys/men, allowed me to better understand my life-long struggles with focus, anxiety, clumsiness, and disorganisation. MY FAVOURITE THING I grew up surrounded by most things handmade and crafted. I was a creative and curious child. Seeing my mother knitting led me to an interest in fashion at an early age. I then studied textiles at art school and a Masters in fashion illustration in Milan. Sewing is something that I discovered much later. The UK has an incredible sewing community and it is here that I fell in love with it. For the Dressmakers Ball in Leicester, I wanted to make one of this incredible red carpet gala dresses. HOW TO MEASURE YOURSELF ACCURATELY ALWAYS MEASURE YOURSELF BEFORE you choose a pattern size to cut out. The sizes do vary greatly from pattern to pattern, so it’s always best to measure yourself accurately and then refer to the pattern’s size chart to find your size. The chart will usually be printed on the pattern envelope or on the instructions inside. Measure yourself in your underwear and preferably in the bra you’ll be wearing underneath your garment as this can alter the measurements slightly. Use a fabric tape measure as it’ll curve around your body well for accuracy. You can measure on your own if you stand in front of a mirror, but, for best results, ask a friend to help so they can check the tape measure is sitting…
