My sewing interests were reignited when I started working in a fabric shop in Bristol. It had been years since I'd used my sewing machine, but it was hearing what customers would be making with the fabrics they were buying that got me inspired to find my sewing machine and set up a sewing desk. I’ve always been creative, dabbling in different crafty hobbies for as long as I can remember, but I never gave sewing its fair chance. That is, until a few long-time friends got their first sewing machines and I quickly became invested. They easily convinced me to join them and get a sewing machine of my own. We started meeting monthly to keep each other inspired. Helping each other solve sewing machine malfunctions and decipher pattern instructions flourished into trying more complex projects, fabric hauls, and planning sewing retreats. But for Cornelius Quiring, the shift into making his own wardrobe was a question of functionality and necessity, rather than creative self-expression. HOW TO MEASURE YOURSELF ACCURATELY ALWAYS MEASURE YOURSELF BEFORE you choose a pattern size to cut out. The sizes do vary greatly from pattern to pattern, so it’s always best to measure yourself accurately and then refer to the pattern’s size chart to find your size. The chart will usually be printed on the pattern envelope or on the instructions inside. Measure yourself in your underwear and preferably in the bra you’ll be wearing underneath your garment as this can alter the measurements slightly. Use a fabric tape measure as it’ll curve around your body well for accuracy. You can measure on your own if you stand in front of a mirror, but, for best results, ask a friend to help so they can check the tape measure is sitting…
