As we enter 2020, let us look back at the year that just preceded it. For our industry, 2019 has indeed been a challenging year. Compact camera sales continued to fall, D-SLR sales faced new challenges and the mirrorless market, although growing, was not growing fast enough to arrest the decline in compact and D-SLR camera sales. Interestingly, smartphone sales also plateaued for the lead players. This was inevitably followed by a decline in operating profit. Industry giant Canon reported an 81-percent decline in profit for the first quarter of 2019. Likewise, Nikon reported a 71-percent plunge in earnings in the first quarter of 2019. Leica Oskar Barnack Award is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and to mark this occasion, Leica Camera AG has introduced a new nomination-based submission process. “In a shift away from the traditional application-based model, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award will consider finalists and ultimately select winners based on nominations from 70 world-renowned photographic experts from over 30 countries. With this nomination process, the honour of being chosen as a finalist is an esteemed accomplishment of its own, as they are recognised and hand-selected by some of the most respected figures impacting the world of photography,” a Leica statement said. Each nominator will elect three photographers based upon their personal evaluation of their work. Apple has reportedly acquired Spectral Edge, a Cambridge, UK-based startup Spectral Edge Ltd., which is expected to help the company improve the performance of iPhone cameras. Spectral Edge has developed a technology that can improve detail and colour on digital cameras by taking an infrared picture and merging it with a conventional colour photo using machine learning, according to online sources. AI has been a main feature in Apple’s latest models. The technology can be applied via software or can be embedded into hardware components.…

Fujifilm has opened its experience centre and shop, christened House of Photography, at 8-9 Long Acre in Covent Garden, London. The store offers customers the chance to try out all Fujifilm products ranging from Instax point-and-shoot cameras to GFX medium format mirrorless cameras. The store also features various printing services as well as Fujifilm’s popular films. The store includes, in addition to the main product space on the ground floor, an upper level that features a photo gallery and a Fujifilm School space for workshops along with a free-to-use studio area. Panasonic Corp has announced that it will expand its manufacturing footprint in India. Panasonic Life Solutions India Pvt., Ltd., the Maharashtra-based manufacturing and sales arm of the company, will build a new factory to produce wiring devices, electrical wire and switchgear with an investment of 2,946 million rupees. The new factory in Sri City Industrial Park in Andhra Pradesh will be Panasonic’s fourth electrical equipment material production base in the country, and is scheduled to start production in 2021. In India, Panasonic has production bases in Haridwar, Daman and Kutch, but has no production base in the south, which has strong purchasing power and great growth potential. Apple has shared new specs with manufacturers in Apple’s Madefor-iPhone (MFi) licensing program for strobes and flash accessories that connect via the iPhone 11 family’s built-in Lightning connector, according to reports. The specs could allow for new types of accessories such as a Made-foriPhone battery case with a built-in flash that connects over the Lightning port. The new specs will allow an accessory’s strobe or lighting component to sync with the device’s integrated flash and also relay the strobe sync signal wirelessly to additional accessories. Currently, there are iPhone accessories with built-in strobes, but they utilise Bluetooth for connectivity and don’t run through the MFi program. Olympus has reportedly issued an official statement in hopes of putting to rest once and for all rumours that the company is considering selling or shutting down its sputtering camera business. Olympus Imaging division saw a 17% year-over-year decline in revenue and continues to lose money for the company. This had given rise to rumours that the company was planning to shut down the division. A new statement issued to Photofocus.com clarifies that it currently has no plans to either close down or sell its camera business. “For Imaging, we currently have no plans to sell the business. Nikon India has announced firmware version 2.20 for Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras. This update offers several improvements that make these cameras even more powerful. In addition, Nikon initiates the service to enable Raw video output function. Updating the Z 7 and Z 6 firmware to Ver. 2.20 enables the use of CFexpress cards. CFexpress cards support even faster data transfer than XQD cards for a smoother and more efficient photographic workflow. Adobe has announced its fourth quarter and fiscal 2019 financial results, posting new quarterly and annual revenue records for the company. Adobe has reported quarterly revenue of $2.99 billion, an increase of 21 percent over the previous fiscal. The company has revealed record annual revenue totalling $11.17 billion, a 24 percent increase year-on-year. Adobe President and CEO Shantanu Narayen called the performance ‘phenomenal,’ citing both loyal customers and product innovation as among the reasons for its success. The company reports growth across multiple business segments, including a 22 percent year-over-year Digital Media segment quarterly revenue increase to $2.08 billion. Adobe’s Creative and Document Cloud segments also grew during Q4 with revenues of $1.74 billion and $339 million, respectively. Jessops, the popular camera and photography retail store, is reportedly seeking a buyer. Its current owner, Peter Jones, is planning to seek a secure a rescue deal with landlords and creditors in the form of a CVA (company voluntary arrangement ), which is likely to lead to store closures and rent cuts. Jones has owned Jessops since 2013, when he bought it out of a controversial administration borne out of £81 million of debt led to the closure of 187 stores.
