The Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA)’s first Modern History Project, an exhibition on the architectural and artistic value of the Nam Seoul Living Arts Museum (Nam Seoul Annex Building of SeMA), where the former Belgian Consulate had opened. During its two-year development period, some parts of the museum covered with white walls was demolished to highlight the unique aspects of the building as the main focus of the development process. The windows, pillars, fireplaces, and other elements of the building become the background for numerous art pieces, to encompass the stories of present day. Kiwon Park, recipient of the 2010 MMCA Artist of the Year award, opened the doors to his solo exhibition on 6 January at the 313 ART PROJECT in Dosan-daero of Gangnamgu. The exhibition marks the artist’s first exhibition in five years since ‘Who’s Afraid of Museums’ in 2011. It had previously been passed by the Land Infrastructure and Transport Committee (LITC) on 18 December and had been pending in the 2nd subcommittee of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee (LJC). The new Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market has finally been completed after fourteen years. The Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market was located in Noryangjin-dong, Dongjakgu, Seoul since 1971, and until 2014, it had a floating population of 30,000 people per day, as the largest traditional market in Korea. However, due to its old facilities and poor image, the Suhyup (National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, Korea) had begun to renovate the market since 2002 when it bought the Noryangjin Fisheries and its refrigerated storages. In 2008, a feasibility research and basic planning project was established, and in 2009, the Hyundai Engineering & Construction and SPACE Group were selected as the designers. Oh Sinwook (principal, Architects Group RAUM) has been experimenting with the concept of spacing and white colour. Spacing is the utilization and visual tuning of surface, in the form of a three-dimensional object. Miari Gogae (Ridge), is a ridge with six lanes in total that goes from Donamdong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul to Mia-dong. In the 1960s, during the period of urban development, a fortune telling town was formed around Miari Gogae, but it was soon dissolved and it has experienced many changes over the years. An exhibition for the 14th Kumho Young Artist Programme 2015, which began in 2004, opened on Jan. 8 at Kumho Museum. The selected artists are Gwangsoo Park, Jaemin Jang, Jaiyoung Cho, and Suin Choi. Each artist occupies a floor and shows their works. Suin Choi’s exhibition ‘It Won’t Appear - No Show’ describes artist’s mental status about delusions on fire. Entwined white, grey, sky blue, and yellowish-green recall a landscape painting, but when the audience come closer forms become unclear and the brush strokes are rough. ‘It won’t appear’ in the title suggests the disturbance experienced internally that cannot turn one’s face away even the artist do not want to see. When Space Becomes Place Woo Hyunjung To understand Dynamic Relaxation in the backyard of the Seoul Olympic Museum of Art (SOMA Museum) in the Olympic Park, we should look at its ‘location’ first. SOMA Museum was established in 2004 to shed new light to the 1.42 million m2 park for the success of Seoul Olympic in 1988 and its cultural results.
