The exhibition ‘New Gameplay’ opened on July 20 at Nam June Paik Art Center, begins as expected with Nam June Paik’s work. A standing microphone is placed in front of a television screening of geometrical waves. Participation TV (1963), which fluctuates waves according to input signals of the audience, is one of Paik’s earliest representative works using digital media as the medium of his artwork. Paik has proposed that television is not a one-way media, but a bilateral media that can be manipulated and used for communication. The National Agency for Administrative City Construction announced the winners of the International Competition for the National Museum Complex Masterplan of Administrative City, Korea, launched last May. This competition was held to propose a development plan for the whole site of the museum complex and a masterplan for the first stage of the project of 75,000m2 , as well as to select finalists for the second competition. On 12 May, Platform-L Contemporary Art Center was opened to public, announcing itself as the ‘place of exchange and collaboration of artists’. It is a cultural complex created by Taejin International Co. Ltd. running the French fashion brand LOUIS QUATORZE. It is expected to become a platform with no disciplinary boundaries, encouraging encounters between fashion, art, and culture. The architecture embodies a spatial ideal as a place to contain the art of this age and to create new networks. Almost all conversations about architecture exhibitions begin with the assertion that architecture is difficult – in some cases impossible – to exhibit. The comparison is made with fine art, where the object, the thing itself, can be exhibited and in the case of architecture it cannot. Regardless of these commonly held beliefs, we have witnessed a rise in exhibitions and biennales on architecture and their related subjects. On Aug. 8 we witnessed the launch of the exhibition ‘Remembering Life, Seoul 2002’, as the last exhibition to be held at the Myeongdong Cathedral Catholic Building K’ARTS Studio Myeong-Dong. The exhibition featured a recomposition of the photographs taken by Reigh Young Bum (professor, Kyonggi University) of Chungjeongro and Nangok since 2002. The hanok village of Chungjeongro 3ga is a group of around 45 urban hanok that are gathered around the back of the Dong-a Ilbo Company Office, Chungjeongro. It is assumed that these hanok were built by a real estate developer in the late 1930s, much like Iksundong of Jongno-gu. Tiles are made through the baking of clay, and used as attachments to a wall, set into the floor or as decorative ceramics rather than as individual objects. However, their functional and aesthetic value hasn’t yet been properly appreciated. What kind of artistic value do tiles have as a medium? The Clayarch Gimhae Museum is holding the exhibition ‘Post-Tile’ to reevaluate their value. This exhibition is focused on their true character, not as their use as a building material. SPACE: Casal Balaguer is known for being a huge project carried out over five progressive stages since 1996. I would like to ask what the progress and main focus was at each stage. For example, the completion of the fifth stage this year marked the end of the whole project after the fourth stage was finished in 2014; what can be regarded as the differences between these two stages? The Independence Hall of Korea was so named following a national consensus formed with the 1982 Independence Hall of Korea Construction Convention, and has a history stretching over three decades since its establishment on 15 August. The overall form of the Independence Hall site is established along an artificially developed linear axis that was formed at the centre of Heukseongsan Mountain to the entrance car park. The axis is of an impressive, almost insurmountable scale, in both width and length. The Gyeorenuri Hall is located within a small hill at the right of the entrance’s parking lot. An area near Beomeosa Temple in Cheongryong-dong 471, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, has become a public gathering place. This is ‘Hama Village’, located in a concentrated area of duck restaurants, a common sight around temples, and the downward mountain path of Geumjeongsan (mountain) from Beomeosa Temple Entrance bus stop heading towards Beomeosa. Although it does not have a proper approach nor an official signboard, the winding mountain path leads to a stretch of field on both sides of a stream, café, and two houses. Its appearance is distinct from the adjacent house-turned restaurants and cafés. An forum was hosted to share information on alternative employment prospects, outlining current examples and opportunities. How can we bring architectural projects that exist in reality into the gallery space without losing the natural depth and complexity of its context? The issue of architecture exhibitions is always over the presence of its existence. Models and drawings act as supportive evidence, and through exhibited objects, that often obtain the status of an artwork, the audience becomes closer to the reality through the wings of imagination. However, when architecture emerges as a theme in curation (the scene of discourse) and not as part of an exhibition (the subject of representation), the situation changes. The star of the third ‘MMCA HYUNDAI MOTOR SERIES’ has been announced. In 2014, it was Lee Bul, and in 2015 Ahn Kyuchul; this year’s artist is Kimsooja. Based in New York, Paris and Seoul, Kimsooja is an artist who is active internationally and is widely known as the ‘Bottari Artist’. Excluding minor, intermittent project exhibitions, this is Kimsooja’s first large scale solo exhibition in Korea for 16 years, since her last one in 2000 at the Rodin Gallery. The sub-genre which receives the greatest spotlight would be interactive media art, which focuses on interaction between artwork and the people. Interactive media art mainly uses sensors attached to actual objects or expresses content via screens.
