I was only in Queenstown for the weekend. My son Elliot and I had jumped on a plane on Friday night and were crashing at Jake Hood’s Queenstown Hill pad. The three of us had been ticking boxes and hitting spots Elliot had only seen in video and photos. I’d been following the Elevate Trail Building Instagram feed and was super intrigued about their latest project, a blue jump trail up on Fernhill. The trail was close to completion but wasn’t finished, and was most definitely closed. Earlier this year after the Maribor DH World Cup I got to spend a week with him for some insight We had a little “training camp” in Sintra, just outside of Lisbon, Portugal, to get everyone back into little bike mode for the Madeira EWS. We had a house on the beach, drank Rosé wine every day by the bottle, rode every day, and surfed twice a day. They really wind me up: those riders who don’t acknowledge my friendly wave when we pass each other out on the forest roads around our local trail network. Am I not good enough for them to wave back to? It’s a non-issue in remote areas where there are far fewer people around. On some DOC tracks in my neck of the woods I might do a few days’ worth of riding before encountering anyone. In those situations, we go further than waving and actually stop to have a chat. The situation I’m talking about is on the more heavily trafficked trail networks. It annoys me so much that I’ve given it some thought, and realised that maybe they’re not intentionally being unfriendly. Perhaps they have their reasons for not returning…

Mountain biking is great, but how can we make it better? Ride a hardtail—and by this, I mean one of the aggressive, long, low, and slack variety. One that you can ride everything on. Why would I do such a crazy thing I hear you ask? Let’s start with the obvious. A hardtail frame doesn’t have any pivots so there are fewer nooks and crannies for crap to build up in. This means more time riding and less time cleaning and maintaining. Fancy getting stronger and faster? When riding a hardtail, your body has to absorb a lot more feedback from the trail without any rear end squish. The UCI recently proposed halving the permissible testosterone threshold for transgender women athletes from 10 nmol/L to 5. The news is another step in the governing body’s struggle to accommodate transgender athletes without discrimination, while ensuring fairness for all. Exactly four years ago I was invited on an adventure to North East Tasmania to explore a new network of trails in development there, as part of an ambitious ploy to rejuvenate the region’s economy via mountain bike tourism. We mountain bikers often get the rough end of the stick (sometimes rightfully so) for building trails the wrong way or in the wrong places, getting us offside with landowners or managers. It’s been no different in Christchurch, which has a multitude of illegal trails and trail networks, despite the large bike park and several popular legal riding areas which host regular dig days. After a life of travelling the globe, Justin Leov found a place to call home just down the road from where he grew up—on the farm where he first fell in love with racing. After eleven years of riding ‘Nerang loam’ (read: loose, fist-sized rocks and coarse sand) in Australia, I thought I’d discovered the mountain biker’s promised land when I came home to New Zealand. After 13 years of constant reinvestment and growth, Southstar Shuttles is leaving the market, but not by choice. The forest landowners are iwi represented by Central North Island Iwi Holdings. Milton Bloomfield is not most people. Christchurch dirtjumper and trail builder extraordinaire Phil McLean hates winter. He loathes it so much he flies to Canada every year for six or seven months. Barring one year when he underwent knee reconstruction, he’s been chasing those long warm days for seven years. It’s not all about beers and bike park laps, though. The harsh sound of a vibrating phone against hardwood jolts me awake, the sting of the quarter to five start very present as a feeling in my eyes. Less than five hours earlier we’d navigated our way to Holmaskjaer hut to be up at dawn. I sneak a cursory glance out of the window and see only stars: exactly what we’d come to see. Just ahead of us are what seem destined to become New Zealand’s most Instagrammed berms, cut and shaped lovingly into the slopes of this true foothill of the Southern Alps. Lake Wanaka stretches out before us and the peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park are just visible through the oncoming weather. One of my favourite anecdotes about Matt is from 2008, when he was dirtbagging around Europe. In those days, 4X was a big deal, contested by the who’s who of the sport due to the intense level of competition. Some forests need regular fires to regenerate. Some trees will not flower unless they have been burned; others need flames to open their cones or buds to release seeds. The pine plantations around Nelson are not those sorts of trees. So when a huge fire broke out in the Pigeon Valley on February 5, 2019, quickly growing to be the largest the country had seen since 1955, it was a disaster—and not just for the 3000 people evacuated from their homes, or the landowners who lost about 2400 hectares of plantation pine. The Trans-Provence is a mythical beast: an event formed in the mists of enduro history, before stage racing as we know it today was dreamt up. Even in 2019, there’s really no comparison. The TP concept was birthed in 2008 from the minds of Ash and Melissa Smith, a couple with English roots who transplanted into the European Alps where their wild ideas were free to bloom like an edelweiss.
