We couldn’t see them, but the stags were so close you could hear their laboured grunts and the sound of antler clashing against antler. Ron scanned the bush below with his binocular, looked at me with a grin, and pointed. Farther down the rocky hill a pair of red stags were joined in battle shielded from us by the trees. We crept down taking care not to send any rocks rolling and caught a glimpse of the deer with antlers locked together, pushing each other forth and back in a trial of strength. WITH LESS than a week to go before the start of the Victorian Duck Season it was time to get moving. I had already made up my mind as to where I was going to put the opening in as I had been hunting foxes in the area over the last few months and had kept an eye on the duck population in the area. With all the billabongs holding good levels of water the ducks had bred up in good numbers, but that was then; now the billabongs were evaporating at a constant rate due to the continuous dry weather we were experiencing. WHEN it comes to hunting Australia’s awesome wild buffalo in the swamps and savannahs of the Top End, the talk and emphasis is often, understandably, centred on the horns of those bulls with the most immense, impressive spreads, the magic hundred-inch-plus bulls. The score is constructed by measuring the girth and length-along-the-outside of each horn, and combining the four together. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with measuring such a bull of my own, although I hope to someday. I have only witnessed two such bulls shot. THE remote North Queensland hunting camp disappeared in my rear-view mirror in a billowing cloud of grayish red bulldust as the Hi-lux rumbled down the road.
