For many railway enthusiasts, England’s West Country, with its picturesque branch lines and coastal routes were magical places to visit in the days of steam, as seen in this issue of Steam Days which portrays the area around the sea wall at Dawlish, and where one could witness, at times, wet weather scenes with the sea breaking over the track as trains rushed by.
From the 1940s through to the diesel era, I either visited the sea wall at Dawlish, or travelled by train from Exeter to Plymouth along it. One could spend countless hours watching titled trains flash by and enjoy a day on the beach at the same time. With a constant flow of Great Western ‘Castles’ and ‘Kings’ – what more could you ask for?
