ENTERING the Jubilee Pavilion for the first time over the 2019 Easter weekend is a breathtaking experience. NEWCASTLE’S United Speed Shop has been busy tearing up a neat HR Holden to create a factory-style pillarless coupe for Melbourne’s Andy Billiet. USS’s bossman, Ryan Carter, first drew up a pillarless two-door HR coupe for Street Machine’s Expression Session some 10 years ago, though he continued to refine the design over subsequent years. “Andy wanted to make a car that was a phantom, as if Holden had built an HR coupe as a design study back in 1967, but with updated wheels and suspension,” explains Ryan. “To make a proper coupe you can’t just cut the pillar out, move it back and stick it back together; that is a two-door sedan. LOOKING at the lone master cylinder on the firewall, you could be forgiven for thinking 15NUTZ runs manual brakes. Not so; it runs an electrically assisted system from Crusin Automotive. Mounted under the dash is a high-pressure electric pump and an accumulator. They feed high-pressure brake fluid directly into the master cylinder. LAST issue we dealt with engine size requirements under the National Guidelines, so this month, it seems logical to talk about other key issues to consider when fitting an engine to your project car. EMISSIONS LET’S start with emissions. The requirements to limit gaseous emissions was introduced in ADR 26 in 1972, when passenger vehicles had to be fitted with a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system to prevent blow-by gasses escaping to the atmosphere, and carbon monoxide emissions were also limited. The requirements became progressively more stringent, and ADR 79 and 80 – the current rules – now apply to all new light and heavy vehicles. RETIRED motor mechanic and sales rep John Strick caught our attention when he inserted 6.0 litres of L98 goodness into a stuffy British roadster and rolled into the Austin-Healey Nationals to watch the establishment squirm. OLD Willunga Hill Road was bypassed in the 1970s by Victor Harbor Road, a four-lane highway slamming straight up and over the hills rather than wending its way through the topography. Thankfully, the original road remained and has become a legendary piece of tarmac, beloved by cyclists and motoring enthusiasts alike. Of course, to get the best out of it, you really want a car that can handle corners; there are more than 30 of them heading up the hillside. PAUL Little’s affair with his Rally Red Kingswood dates back well before the 16 years he’s called it his own. Bought new by a co-worker’s mother and passed on to her daughter, the car held his eye for several years. Eventually, illness and the 253’s thirst led the daughter to bequeath the car to Paul – provided that the HG’s originality and history were respected. “She wanted it to go to someone that would look after it and not hack it to pieces,” says Paul, a mechanic, and the fact that he did maintenance work on the car probably helped seal the deal. WHEN the owner of this magnificent mill, Tony De Marco, told legendary car builder Howard Astill that he wanted a brand new Cleveland donk for his XC Falcon Cobra build, Howard just about told him to get stuffed: “You can’t buy a new Cleveland; you haven’t been able to do that for bloody years!” Fortunately, a compromise was found with A-list engine builder Sam Fenech from Westend Performance, who knocked out a 575hp street package for Tony that would make any Ford fan drool.
