There are three ways chess players can go on their gaming journey. They can take the obvious route, become a chess person – go to the conventions, read the books, get into the lore, and eventually attempt to fight a computer. They can take up Go and realise that they’ve spent a lot of time of a very shallow game until this point (or so it is reported to me). Cohn’s Space Station Phoenix started life as a “giant and slow-moving mess”. Almost a decade of playtesting later, as well as input from Rio Grande Games, it’s finally been brought to market. So has it managed to rise from the ashes? The name is actually also a pun on this engine builder/destroyer’s very premise: dismantle your spaceship fleet to get metal for a showier space station. The reason for doing so is woolly – aliens have discovered Earth and want to profit from it. Perhaps a more topical backstory may have worked better here, such as aliens farming eco materials to help Earth…

Designer: Juan A Nácher | Publisher: Draco Ideas Scope Stalingrad takes place during the Second World War and sees German and Soviet troops engaged in tense battles in the ruins of Stalingrad. Your aim is to either reach a certain number of objective points or to take out all your opponent’s snipers. Scope’s production is, in a word, perfunctory. The two decks are compromised of a mix of stock images and the occasional cropped black & white photo. The graphic design is readable but lacks character or atmosphere. In an era of crowdfundingled component bloat, it’s certainly good to see games dispensing with unnecessary miniatures or expensive first-player markers, but here the art style feels undercooked rather than crisply minimalist – a functional prototype rather than something you feel excited…

Over the course of 13 different quests, it blends Star Trek-esque optimism with high adventure and uses a talented cast of authors to take us on a whistlestop tour of settings that reach beyond D&D’s traditional comfort zone of western fantasy. As with most of the other anthologies Wizards of the Coast have published in recent years, the array of adventures found in Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel are all linked by a common theme. You accomplish this by drawing cards from a personal deck of fabric styles, from polka dot or stripes to floral or tartan, and slotting these behind models wearing various outfits. BELL & HAMMER This leisurely family gambling game was purportedly invented by Viennese art dealer H F Müller around 1800. It became popular throughout Europe during the 19th century and is said to be still played today in various places, though I can’t locate a current publisher. An old Dutch friend of mine tells me his family always used to play it at Christmas. One source says it was (like Dreidel) especially popular among Jewish communities during Hanukkah. Rising out of the subaqueous northern reaches of the world’s longest mountain range is Iceland – a sparsely populated volcanic island set atop the immense Mid-Atlantic Ridge. With the country possibly only being inhabited by Björk and a scattering of neighbours, one might not expect Iceland to possess a notable tabletop gaming presence – but, as we shall explore, the hobby is as active as the island’s many volcanoes. The Mirroring of Mary King is the sixth title from Jim Felli, the mad man behind 2021 hit Cosmic Frog. The Tarot, a deck of cards most associated with the act of fortune telling, divination, probably something a bit spooky, started out as a simple set of cards used for a number of European card games like Tarocchini (Italy) or Grosstarok (Germany). That is until some (French) occultists got their hands on it in the 18th century and, more or less, started making some stuff up about the meaning of each card. Decent notes are the lifeblood of any long-running campaign. They’re the information-grease that lets the story-wheels flow. They’re the thin thread of sense stretching across a river of nonsense.
