The crumble is always traced back to the wartime years in the UK. Rations ruled and so shortcut recipes abounded, like using a simple crumble of flour, lard and sugar (or cheese if savoury) to top a pie. Here, say the books, crumble was born. recipes for “crumble” only started to pop up in British cookbooks after WWII. Cookbooks from the previous century may show recipes for apple snow, apple hedgehog, apple fools, apple dumplings, apple cheesecake, apple charlottes, suet apple puddings and apple amber puddings (like an apple version of a lemon meringue pie), but nothing with a baked topping except apple pie, which dates back to the 14th century.
