Hacking into an account doesn’t always require deep expertise in exploiting vulnerabilities. Sometimes it’s a simple as taking leaked information and placing it elsewhere on the Internet. That’s why the release of massive password collections are dangerous – and why alarms are now sounding over a drop of nearly 10 billion passwords. First spotted in a forum on 4 July, RockYou2024 is a compilation of 9.94 billion leaked passwords. The massive password dump includes entries from the RockYou2021 collection, data from newer breaches and leaks, and data cracked by the person who posted it. RockYou2021 released with 8.4 billion password entries, including millions related to social media sites. There’s an enticing version of Windows 11 making its rounds on the internet right now, offering a slimmed-down design without any of the usual bloatware bogging down and bloating up the operating system. On 25 June, Microsoft released KB5039302 for Windows 11, a patch that brings a few small improvements for users, which are fully described in the official changelog. This patch distinguishes between changes that Microsoft is gradually rolling out to users and improvements that the software company is rolling out to everyone in one fell swoop. As we report on page 7, Microsoft has released its KB5039302 update. While the update had some interesting stuff in it, it turns out that it can cause Windows 11 PCs to restart in a continuous loop. Specifically, Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2 are affected by this bug. Windows servers are not affected. Fortunately, KB5039302 isn’t installed on all Windows 11 computers because it’s an optional update.
