TAKING ACTION We are often overwhelmed by requests for animal, conservation and nature content. We extend a warm welcome to Tsephiso Nhemachena, fondly known to all at The Big Issue as Tsephi, our new social worker who has become a member of our Big Issue family. Tsephi earned her bachelor’s degree in Social Work and completed her Master’s in Public health at the University of Cape Town. This broad educational exposure to social issues has expanded her knowledge of the intersection of health and the social welfare of people. Tsephi is on board to assist with our vendors, particularly their personal and professional wellbeing. Where do you conduct your animal rescues? We are called to deal with some very cruel cases in Cape Town involving abused dogs and cats. Areas include Ocean View, Masiphumelele, Vrygrond, Lavender Hill and Redhill. Our TEARS Mobile Clinic operates specifically within those mandated areas. We often receive calls from other animal welfare organisations or members of the public to assist animals in distress that are outside of our operational footprint, and we always try to help if we can. Tell us about your education programme where you teach children and adults about animal care. We use our mobile unit to travel and reach children (lockdown restrictions permitting), teaching them how to treat animals. Children in turn remind the adults in their lives. In June 2021, Lytton in Canada experienced its hottest day ever, reaching 49.6° C, way above its previous record of 45° C. Shortly after, this same village was destroyed in a massive wildfire. This excessive heat was responsible for many deaths and health problems and caused power lines to melt, motorways to buckle, and disrupted infrastructure.
