The heavily polluted Jukskei etches a path through Johannesburg's industrial areas and its crowded townships. It bears decades of human waste and industrial pollution. Q: Your roots lie in the area where the series is set. Did you draw on personal experiences to write the books? In December 1998, 15 comrades and I stood on the steps of St George's Cathedral in Cape Town to launch the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC). Our purpose was to ensure that government provide antiretroviral drugs to pregnant mothers to prevent HIV transmission. TAC also demanded that drug companies make ARVs affordable to every person living with HIV. At that time one month's ARVs cost between R4 500 and R10 000. Those who could afford it were becoming sick and bought medicines and lived, while poorer people died. Former president Thabo Mbeki said he did not know anyone with HIV. By nurturing a love of the natural environment in young people living on the borders of our pristine wild spaces like the Greater Kruger National Park, we can contribute to sustainable development and tap into the sector's rich potential for employment. Realising this, education nonprofit Good Work Foundation (GWF) created its Travel & Tourism Academy, which offers career training in conservation and hospitality to young rural Mpumalanga residents.
