Creating a home that would appeal to her clients’ contemporary tastes should have been a simple task for interior designer Sarah Moore, but the brief came with a bit of a twist. During the process of updating this family cottage, designer Ashley Montgomery had no shortage of inspiration. “The piece of land the house sits on is really beautiful,” says the Ontario-based designer. “It’s on the lake, so we’ve got lots of color coming in; there’s tons of greenery and lots of trees, so we wanted to play off that and just bring a lot of warmth into the home.” Built in the 1960s and updated in the 2000s, the home was rife with potential—and Ashley and her team were prepared to uncover it with thoughtful design choices and a targeted use of fresh paint. Since 2002, Sweet Peas Garden Shop has provided residents of Homewood, Alabama, with excellent local products and a fun and funky storefront curb appeal. Area gardeners turn to the trusted staff for advice on everything from annuals and perennials to vegetables, herbs, and much more. Sarah Smith took over the business in January 2020 from the original owner, Jon Culver. “I had been working there part-time and left to do some landscaping design,” says Sarah. “I told Jon if he ever wanted to sell that I would take over.” Since taking ownership, Sarah has maintained Jon’s vision and preserved details that capture the heart of Sweet Peas, like the mural painted by a local artist and the peace signs hanging on the exterior. “It’s quirky and fun,” she says of…
