Thanks to the efforts and generosity of many, what started as an idea to create a single World Oceans Day event evolved into a remarkable week-long program of speakers, panels, films, art installations, and meetings at our headquarters and the United Nations. It’s hard to pick the highlights, there were so many—a seemingly endless array of scientists, artists, authors, conservationists, filmmakers, photographers, policy makers, diplomats, veterans, and students (both local and from around the world, representing UNESCO Marine Heritage Sites). Perhaps most striking was the way Explorers Club headquarters became a destination, a place for connecting, gathering, and planning. AS MISSION CONTROL SPECIALIST WHEN APOLLO 11 RAN LONG ON ITS LANDING—WITH BUZZ ALDRIN MED’76 AND THE LATE NEIL ARMSTRONG BARELY REACHING THE LUNAR SURFACE BEFORE USING UP THEIR FUEL—DUKE DEADPANNED, “TRANQUILITY, WE COPY YOU ON THE GROUND. Sometime between July 10 and 12, a one-trillion-tonne iceberg, among the largest on record, calved away from Antarctica’s Larsen C Ice Shelf. Dubbed A68, it has a surface area of 5,800 square kilometers and a volume of 1,155 cubic kilometers—enough ice to fill Lake Erie twice. Winds and currents now carry the newborn berg toward the Falkland Islands. Commenting on the calving, Adrian Luckman of Swansea University, lead researcher on the MIDAS ice shelf monitoring project, said, “This event is a spectacular episode in the recent history of Antarctica’s ice shelves, involving forces beyond the human scale, in a place where few of us have been, and one that will fundamentally change the geography of this region.” Such once rare ecological events are becoming more frequent, evincing Earth’s rapidly changing…
