Think as far back as you can and remember when you first fell in love with being outdoors, seeing wildlife, and feeling the joy of exploration. Who was there? A dad, a grandfather, a mom, a crazy uncle, or maybe you were inspired by an icon like Jim Fowler or Jacques-Yves Cousteau? Do you see a pattern? There was always someone around. For some of us, our childhood dreams go beyond admiration and become our life calling as members of The Explorers Club. Explorers are increasingly on the frontlines of the world’s most cutting-edge conservation efforts and initiatives. Our members are fortunate to work in some of the last wild places on the planet, amazing spaces where intact assemblages of native species still fulfill their ecological roles. With a constant…

Whether you know it as Montezuma’s revenge, Delhi belly, the Aztec two-step, Mexican foxtrot, gringo gallop, hobo gravy, or one of the many other colorful euphemisms, gastroenteritis, more commonly known as travelers’ diarrhea (TD), is one of the most common concerns for travelers to remote or underdeveloped areas. Symptoms of TD, which affects 30 to 70 percent of international travelers—depending on destination, season of travel, and other factors—range from mild to severe with results varying from minimal impact to debilitating conditions. And when it comes to treatment, we are in the midst of an arms race between medication effectiveness and bacterial and protozoan antimicrobial resistance. With the looming prospect of expanded border construction between the United States and Mexico, we decided that it was an ideal time to broach the subject of boundaries, not from the usual political standpoint, which is the one most often considered, but instead from an environmental point of view. As we all know, Nature could care less about the lines we draw on maps when it comes to seasonal migrations and wildlife corridors. With regard to the proposed border construction along the Rio Grande in Texas, we turned to filmmaker Ben Masters. His newly released documentary, The River and the Wall, examines just what’s at stake environmentally.
