It has been nearly two decades since Malcolm Gladwell defined a “tipping point” as a moment in which a critical mass unleashes a chain of events that in most cases is all but irreversible. MAPPING ETHIOPIA’S BLUE NILE

AN AUTHOR, TELEVISION PRESENTER, FORMER ROYAL ENGINEER, AND EXPLORERS CLUB MEDALIST, JOHN BLASHFORD-SNELL IS PRESIDENT OF THE SCIENTIFIC EXPLORATION SOCIETY. WRECK OF THE SAN JOSÉ FOUND The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) has confirmed the discovery of the 310-year-old wreck of the San José—a 62-gun, three-masted Spanish galleon that sank with a cargo worth an estimated $17 billion in today’s currency. Often refered to as the “holy grail of shipwrecks,” the ship, which was discovered off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia, went down with its treasure of gold, silver, and emeralds in 1708, during a battle with British ships in the War of Spanish Succession. The wreck was found at a depth of more than 600 meters of water on November 27, 2015, during an expedition led by Roger Dooley, chief project archaeologist for Maritime Archaeology Consultants, and carried out under the aegis of the Colombian Ministry of Culture.
