That’s how our late Honorary Chair John Glenn defined exploration when he received our Legendary Explorer Medal in 2013. Curiosity is at the core of our institution and a defining trait of our members, whether they explore oceans, space, mountains, jungles, or caves. This curiosity persists through time, though the names and places change. At our upcoming ECAD we’ll celebrate the trajectory of space exploration, honoring Captain James Lovell of Apollo 13 fame and accepting the American Flag that flew at Arlington Cemetery during Senator Glenn’s interment. At the same time, we’ll hear from Anousheh Ansari, the first female private space explorer and a title sponsor of the Ansari XPrize, and recognize the inspiring space achievements of Jeff Bezos. The Explorers Club plays a vital role in these generational transitions.…

A FELLOW OF THE EXPLORERS CLUB SINCE 2011, JUSTIN FORNAL IS A WRITER, FILMMAKER, AND LONG-DISTANCE SWIMMER. HIS WORK HAS APPEARED IN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, VICE, AND ROADS & KINGDOMS. The goal was to open up this vast, virtually unknown land and to map the east coast of Russia and the northwest coast of North America.
