President I am thrilled to share the news of a historic partnership with Discovery Communications and The Explorers Club. This agreement is the biggest brand partnership in the 116-year history of The Explorers Club. It includes a seven-figure grant program, which eclipses all previous grant support combined. In 2018, author, adventurer, and television producer James Campbell, 58, helped organize a trek across Papua New Guinea on a WWII trail that he rediscovered in 2006 while researching and writing his book, The Ghost Mountain Boys. The rugged 240-kilometer route was used by a battalion of American soldiers ordered by General MacArthur to march to the battlefields on the north coast of the Papuan Peninsula. Military historians call their 42-day trek “one of the cruelest in military history.” This June, Campbell and historian and adventurer Peter Gamgee, 62, from Queensland, Australia, will lead two strenuous treks on the same trail. Today, however, one can easily get halfway around the world in under a day, enabling us to meet and greet people far distant and far different from ourselves in a matter of hours. Black swan events in medicine are extremely rare but have severe impact. And right now we have a black swan unfolding its wings—the coronavirus outbreak.
