As I write this, we are still energized by the extraordinary Global Exploration Summit (GLEX) in Ottawa, hosted in collaboration with our friends at the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. James Campbell’s new book, Heart of the Jaguar, chronicles the endeavors of conservationists who have dedicated their lives to saving the jaguar—in particular, the prolific career of Alan Rabinowitz, who spearheaded the conservation of the jaguar habitat. Campbell says Rabinowitz, who died of cancer at age 64 in 2018, considered the jaguar to be “the epitome of wildness, tenacity, and resilience, capable of reshaping itself to fit a wide variety of environments.” Jaguars, which have ranged throughout the Americas as an apex predator for a million years, face innumerable threats to their existence. These threats have increased exponentially in recent decades due to climate change, habitat loss, mining, wildfires, and human predation. In March 2022, headlines around the world heralded the news of the discovery of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance, which sank in Antarctica’s Weddell Sea on November 21, 1915, after being crushed by pack ice, which had beleaguered the barquentine since January of that year. Rather than marking a closing chapter in the history of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917, the discovery opened an exciting new chapter in marine archaeology—the fabled ship, standing upright in 3,008 meters of water, is serving as a test bed for a formidable new platform that is enabling researchers to document even the most remote sites in extraordinary detail in record time. The water along Denmark’s north coast often runs green and wind-whipped. Charts flatten that complexity into a wide yellow wash and call it sand. On paper, the bottom looks simple, but the fishermen of Thorup Strand knew better because their nets, their seasons, and their children’s prospects depend on what lives there. International bottom trawlers had begun to rumble through nearby grounds, heavy gear scouring habitats the local fleet had long avoided. Their request to explorer and journalist Klaus Thymann was specific and sober: gather proof strong enough to hold in a meeting room before nursery areas slipped past easy repair. WHEN IT COMES TO APOLLO 11 HISTORY, STEVE BALES ISN’T A HOUSEHOLD NAME LIKE NEIL ARMSTRONG, BUZZ ALDRIN, OR MIKE COLLINS. BUT YOU COULD SAY THAT HE WAS AS IMPORTANT TO THE HISTORIC LUNAR LANDING ON JULY 20, 1969, AS THAT TRIO OF ASTRONAUTS WERE. DURING THE POWERED DESCENT OF THE LUNAR MODULE, WHICH HOUSED ARMSTRONG AND ALDRIN, TWO WARNING LIGHTS UNEXPECTEDLY FLASHED AT MISSION CONTROL IN HOUSTON. THEY WERE 1201 AND 1202 ALARMS.
