When Robyn Warren was a health and physical education teacher in the New York City public school system, she realized that engaging her students through fan-inspired twists made them a lot more excited about wellness. With Hunger Games-themed gym class games, and language like “single-player and group programs,” she found her own superpower: Helping geeks and nerds like herself evolve their relationships with their bodies and wellness. In 2022, the average price of a ticket to see a Broadway show in New York City was $133, according to Statista. For marginalized and low-income theatre fans, that cost can be unfathomable. That’s why actors, activists, and theatre fans Sis Thee Doll and Anna María founded Thee Open House Project, a community resource dedicated to making shows more accessible for marginalized artists and audiences. In 2009, Britney Spears superfan Megan Radford learned of a new legal arrangement for her favorite singer, and was rightfully wary. Under this agreement, Spears would be held in a years-long conservatorship without basic rights or autonomy over her life, finances, or career decisions. Nearly immediately, Radford held her own one-woman protest outside a Spears concert, wearing a “Free Britney” t-shirt. “When you really care about a human, it’s not that much bigger of a step to start advocating for her rights,” Radford told CNN. But the diversity we see in genres is not often extended to the diversity in the publishing industry, making stories by authors of color even more necessary. Sadly, access to books is another barrier that keeps people from reading new stories, and things like book bans and library closures don’t help. These roadblocks inspired Sofia Akel, an avid reader and race equality specialist, to start her own organization: the Free Books Campaign.
