Being a member of the LGBTQ+ community in the United States in 2025 is a paradoxical experience — one I struggle to summarize in just a few words. Elected leaders unabashedly promote policies and rhetoric that attempt to erase queer and trans people from societal, recorded, or literal existence, often seemingly without consequences. Meanwhile, our LGBTQ+ friends, neighbors, and loved ones remain right there beside us — flesh and bones we can hold, embody, and witness in this tangible reality. I find myself repeatedly asking: How can LGBTQ+ existence be erased when the people we love are right here, radiating miraculous and boundless joy? It's no secret that homosexual behavior is natural in the animal kingdom. For example, male zebra finches form lifelong monogamous relationships with each other, which include courtship dances and sex. Roughly 10% of all male sheep exhibit homosexual tendencies, too. On a farm, however, rams who don't mate with female sheep are considered useless and often end up in slaughterhouses. For shepherd Michael Stücke, this fact became a calling. According to the latest Gallup poll on LGBTQ+ identification, 9.3% of American adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or something other than heterosexual — signaling that respondents feel safer and more comfortable claiming an LGBTQ+ identity than they have in past years. The survey, which was based on 14,000 interviews conducted across 2024, revealed that LGBTQ+ identification is up one percentage point from 2023. In the 12 years that Gallup has been tracking sexual orientation, LGBTQ+ identification has nearly tripled. Rates among young people have also increased, with 23.1% of Gen Z and 14.2% of Millennials identifying as LGBTQ+. In the Emmy award-winning animated comedy “Bob's Burgers,” smooth-talking sex worker Marshmallow was introduced six episodes into the show's now 286-episode run. Rarely seen without her white slingshot bikini, Marshmallow is a loveable fixture who helps the Belcher family with their crisis-of-the-week. For years, fans of the show debated whether Marshmallow is canonically transgender. In May 2023, “Bob's Burgers” creator Loren Bouchard finally set the record straight, announcing that trans actress Jari Jones had taken on the voice role. “Marshmallow is trans,” Bouchard posted on the social media site X. “Speaking for myself, I was well intentioned but ignorant when we launched that character. Despite bans and limitations in 21 states, conversion therapy still has its foothold in religious communities throughout the U.S. A 2023 report published by the Public Library of Science stated that the practice is associated with “severe psychological distress, depression, substance abuse, and attempted suicide” — even years later. When Asheville, North Carolina's queer bar and event space DayTrip was devastated by Hurricane Helene, the owners, and husbands, Brandon and Davie Davis had only been in business for about a month.
