Each episode of CBS’ Elsbeth — starring Carrie Preston in the title role, which won her a 2013 Emmy for best guest actress in a drama for the character’s appearance on The Good Wife — follows a similar “howdunit” premise: The audience sees a guest star commit murder, and Preston’s idiosyncratic Elsbeth Tascioni puts together the pieces to solve the mystery and bring the murderer to justice. On a recent Friday, Richard Gadd ducked into a London pub before seeing his favorite band, The Pogues, hit the stage. A quiet night with friends quickly derailed into a fan frenzy because of the massive popularity of Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, the critically acclaimed limited series that Gadd created and stars in based on traumatic real-life experiences. “It was chaos,” he explains of the scene that unfolded as patrons, one after another, rushed over to share stories about how the seven episodes had affected them. “I thought, ‘Oh, I can’t really go into pubs anymore and expect to sit quietly in a corner and have some food.’ ” A similar situation played out on the plane when Gadd flew to Los Angeles in early May, as the pilots exited the…

At the beginning of Hulu’s Shogun, set in 1600s Japan, English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) is taken prisoner by local samurai. While being shipped to Osaka, a storm sends Spanish sailor Vasco Rodrigues overboard, and Blackthorne rescues him. The sequence was filmed to look almost entirely as if it were captured in a single shot, but in reality, “The shot was divided into four executable elements while still retaining that visceral first-person perspective,” explains cinematographer Christopher Ross. The D.P. chose to highlight the sequence because of all the moving parts and departments that came together to re-create the violent sea storm.
