THERE IS a special kind of magic involved in blocking lace knitting. What starts out looking like a scrunched up hair net can be transformed into a thing of breath-taking beauty, and all it takes is water and some stretching. To ensure the best possible results, it is of course necessary to choose the right materials. Whilst it’s possible to knit lace in acrylic or nylon yarn, it won’t hold its shape particularly satisfactorily, and you’ll find you’re back at the hair net phase perhaps before you’ve even left home. To get the best results, use a yarn made from natural fibres, of which wool and silk give particularly good results. “MY WORK REFLECTS MY CONCERNS ABOUT THE EXPLOITATION OF NATURE BY MAN” ANITA BRUCE and I met when we were both contributing to the UK’s version of the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef at the Southbank Centre. Crafters had been asked to create coral forms, to raise awareness of the plight of the coral reefs and their battle against sea pollution. Anita’s contribution stood out, being neither crocheted nor hyperbolic, but was rather a wire plankton knitted in the round. As soon as the sample for Sarah Hatton’s ‘Otter Cove’ cardigan for Issue 107 arrived in our offices, I knew I wanted one for myself! I had to break my New Year’s resolution not to buy any yarn, because I didn’t have any DK in my stash, only lots of 4ply and laceweight. Luckily I found the recommended yarn, Rowan’s Pure Wool Superwash DK, on sale at LoveKnitting.com in a shade of conifer green which I liked.
