Mary Henderson Meadow Thistle MARY HENDERSON has a passion for traditional Scottish knitting, and she has combined two of her favourite styles in this neat cardigan. The body fabric uses a lovely Fair Isle pattern, paired with colourful corrugated ribbing around the hem. The lacy cropped sleeves, meanwhile, are worked in a double eyelet ribbing, and the button bands and neck edging are in moss stitch. Mary’s design is worked in the round with a column of steek stitches, which are cut open and secured at the end. It has been knitted in a Shetland 4ply wool from Jamieson’s of Shetland. GERMAN DESIGNER Martina Behm took the knitting world by storm with her iconic ‘Hitchhiker’ shawl design in 2010, and has gone on to create many beautiful shawl patterns, as well as hats and other accessories. She told us about the people and places that inspire her work. Who inspired you to take up knitting? “The one person who seems to have inspired most knitters on this planet: Grandma! Emma Vining Selsey “MY DESIGN combines multiple lines moving in different directions,” says Emma Vining. “The lower border and cuffs are knitted in a slip stitch mosaic design. Using two colours, the mosaic is worked in two parts: in the first part shade A is worked in garter stitch; in the second part shade B is worked in garter stitch. BACK IN 2001, a group of enthusiastic women gathered together in the village of Caldbeck, Cumbria. The area is situated on the northern edge of the Lake District, and one of its traditional industries is sheep farming. A desire to celebrate local wool and craftwork brought the spinners, dyers, feltmakers, farmers and weavers together to form a co-operative. There The Wool Clip was born, with a mission to produce and sell locally made wool products, promote classic crafts and advocate Cumbrian sheep breeds. Today there are 14 members of the cooperative, who also run a shop at Priest’s Mill in Caldbeck and organise Woolfest, the British festival of wool, each year. Socks from the toe up I enjoy your magazine very much and have knitted several patterns over the years. However, much as I love knitting socks (I always have at least one pair on the needles), I find most of your patterns are top down. I knit my socks two at a time, toe up, on circulars, which is so much easier and I never get second sock syndrome! I use Judy’s Magic Cast on which can be found on YouTube. Heels can still be knitted with a gusset and heel flap or short rows, whichever is preferred. I alternate depending on the yarn or pattern. I will show you how to work out the adjustments required to get your sleeveheads to fit the armhole, whether they’re too narrow or wide.
