WHEN A car accident put an end to her horse riding days, North Yorkshirebased Ellie Stokeld took inspiration from the Mule Cross ewe and her two lambs who grazed alongside her horses, helping to “keep the land right”. Ellie looked into buying a couple of pedigree ewe lambs with a view to showing them, and a chance meeting with a Border Leicester ram at the East of England Show made Ellie’s mind up: this was the breed for her. “Two ewe lambs, Martha and Minnie, were purchased in 1996 for me by the breeder of that wonderful ram, and that’s where it all began!” Ellie tells me. Elizabeth Lovick Hvalba ELIZABETH LOVICK loves to explore traditional shawl constructions from around Europe, and her latest design for The Knitter is based on the classic Faroese shape. These comprise two triangles with a central gusset between them; the result is that this type of shawl stays on the shoulders better than many flat shawls. Pat Menchini Felicity THE STYLE of Pat Menchini’s summer top harks back to the knits of the 1950s. The deep ribbing and the lace panels down the sides combine to give a flattering, elongated appearance to the garment. Q Can you remind me how to do Kitchener stitch, please? A Kitchener stitch is an essential technique used for grafting sock toes. When you are ready to graft, don’t cast off. Distribute an equal number of stitches across two needles, with wrong sides facing and your yarn to the right. The working yarn should be coming from the last stitch on the back needle. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail that’s long enough to work one row of knitting, with a little extra. SOURCES AS diverse as Irish woodlands, minerals, and city pavements have inspired the hand-dyed colour palettes of The Yarn Collective. This new range of artisan merino yarns has been developed in partnership with independent designers from around the world. The range was launched with Portland Lace, a stunning kettle-dyed yarn with colours curated by renowned lace designer Melanie Berg. “Putting my favourite colourways together was very much like painting with my watercolours,” says Melanie. Kettle-dyeing was used to create ten shades, with beautiful tonal variations throughout. The tantalising shade names give hints to the inspiration behind them. ‘The Magician’, for example, is a rich, deep purple – “it’s mysterious and promising, just like a game of Tarot cards,” says Melanie. Emma Vining Rococo Diamonds “MY DESIGN of linked diamonds was inspired by beautiful Rococo styles found in the Wallace Collection in London,” says Emma Vining. This short, sleeveless top has a twisted stitch design on a reverse stocking stitch background. Beginning with a twisted stitch rib, the links emerge, then extend to the neighbouring diamonds. Penelope Hemingway Mavis DESIGNER AND historian Penelope Hemingway has been researching the lives of the Land Girls - the members of the Women’s Land Army during the Second World War - and brings us an insight into their day-to-day lives in her article on page 43.
