Q I usually work eyelet buttonholes on my cardigans, but they’re sometimes a bit too stretchy. Is there an alternative I could try? A Eyelet buttonholes are the most commonly used buttonholes, and create a small hole with a soft, stretchy edge. Due to a lack of a firm edge, this buttonhole is best suited to lighter yarns and smaller needles; it can be tricky to make it look neat in anything heavier than a DK-weight yarn. For a firmer, neater buttonhole in heavier yarn weights or less elastic yarns, you could try the double decrease buttonhole method (1). THERE’S A 1930s look to this pretty cardigan by Helen Metcalfe. She has published many pattern collections, as well as creating projects for yarn companies including The Fibre Co. Clare shares her design insights and tutorials on her blog, Knit Share Love. Who inspired you to take up knitting? “While my paternal grandmother was an avid knitter, I grew up on the other side of the world from her, so didn’t really knit as a child. LONDONERS WILL be treated to the unusual and rather wonderful sight of sheep being herded down The Mall on 12 October. Flocks of Southdown and Oxford Down will descend on the capital as part of the Woolly Roadshow, a project aimed at educating people about British wool and our native sheep breeds. The project is spearheaded by David and Karen Griffiths, who are passionate about rare breeds. The couple, who run a mill in the Derbyshire Dales as well as farming their own rare-breed sheep, set up the Woolly Roadshow in 2017 during British Wool Week. They embarked on a tour of England, Scotland and Wales, organising displays of local sheep breeds and spinning demonstrations along the way. ONE OF the problems with knitting stripes in the round is that each colour’s start and end points don’t meet up, as the end of the round is higher than the beginning - making a stair-step effect or ‘jog’. When you knit in the round, you are knitting in a spiral, so that each round is layered on top of the one before. This isn’t really noticeable when knitting with just one colour yarn, but the colour changes in striped fabric make it hard to miss (1). Helical, or helix, stripes take advantage of this spiral construction, with the colours following each other around, creating a barberpole effect.
