AN ELEGANT pattern of twisted stitches decorates this feminine sock design from Jane Burns. The patterning starts in the cuff, and flows down into the leg; both are worked from charts. The heels and toes are knitted in a contrasting colour for added interest. Jane has used yarn from The Wool Barn, an artisan hand-dyer based in Hertfordshire. YORK AND Edinburgh were a la mode in the Regency period of the early 19th century, thanks to their grand Palladian architecture, stylish Assembly Rooms, and fashionable shops. It was no coincidence that both cities became home to pioneers of knitting publishing, including Elizabeth Jackson. Elizabeth Ruddock was born on 26th March, 1809, at Horbury, Wakefield, in the West Riding of Yorkshire; the daughter of a cloth manufacturer, David Ruddock, and his wife, Mary Armitage. One of eleven children, Elizabeth’s childhood was blighted by the early death of her father. Elizabeth’s brother, George, emigrated to St Petersburg, Russia in the 1830s, and a number of the family followed him there. St Petersburg exported linen to the UK in the early 19th century and imported West Riding textile technology and expertise.…

THIS DISTINCTIVE design by Kristin Blom is first knitted sideways, then seamed together and worked top-down for the bottom edging. The criss-cross pattern is a type of modern open lace. “The fabric has a lacy look, but it’s actually a rib pattern consisting of a twist and purl stitches,” explains Kristin. “The Border Mill yarn is a dream to work with: the alpaca and the merino give structure and warmth; the silk gives it a bit of shine; and you have the bamboo for a bit of drape.” PATTERN NOTES This garment is worked sideways, from sleeve to sleeve. SIX YEARS ago, Jess James-Thomson turned her knitting obsession into a career and founded her own yarn shop. Back then, she couldn’t have imagined that one of her sweater designs, featuring two of her own hand-dyed yarns, would one day be featured on prime-time television! “THIS UNUSUALLY constructed cardigan combines both round and row knitting, and was inspired by the island of Barbados where my parents were born,” says Jeanette Sloan. The way in which the borders of four parishes (St George, St John, St Philip and Christchurch) meet echoes the way in which the richly textured lace grows outwards from the centre back. THE SWEDISH knitwear designer Kristin Blom is an exciting talent who has been making a name for herself as a source of modern, elegant knits with a playful touch. Her first design for The Knitter, a sideways-knit jumper, can be found on page 48.
