Q If I make a mistake while knitting complex lace, I find it hard to rip it back. Can you offer any advice? Ironwork diamonds Ironwork ventilation or security grids on buildings frequently have an openwork element, allowing the passage of air. The beautiful grid shown in picture 1 is from a low window I saw on a building in Lisbon, Portugal. The diamond grid is very dominant in the pattern, with large spaces between the floral joining motifs. Eyelets, especially those made by using a double yarn-over, are an excellent way of adding this kind of openwork detail to a grid-like twist or cable design. Using a diamond-shaped framework, a large eyelet has been added to the centre of the wrapped-diamond stitch pattern in my sketch shown in picture 3. The placement of the double eyelet echoes that of the wrapped stitches, by also having a regular grid-like pattern within the swatch.…

HELEN ROBERTSON is one of those multi-talented designers who has not come to her craft through any kind of traditional route. Based on the mainland of Shetland, about 40 miles from Lerwick, she is a native of this amazing archipelago. Like so many Shetlanders, she left the islands to study in Aberdeen, where she completed an honours degree in physics. But she did return, and spent some time as an adult tutor working at the Shetland College, where she helped students returning to learning to develop their education and confidence - an incredibly important job in itself. MANY KNITTERS are all too familiar with the misery of hand and wrist pain. Prolonged periods of knitting can result in stiffness and discomfort, yet we’ve all been guilty at one time or another of knitting for too long without taking breaks, telling ourselves we’ll finish “just one more row…” which before we know it has led to fifty more rows! More worryingly, knitters are at risk of developing repetitive strain injury (RSI) in the muscles and tendons in our wrists, which can force us to stop knitting completely until the symptoms have eased. RSI is much easier to prevent than to treat, and so it’s worth taking a little time to try some simple exercises that can improve flexibility in your hands and wrists, and help to avoid inflammation…
