THE ‘CENSUS of the poor’ made in Norwich in 1570 is a very interesting document that gives us a glimpse of the lives of poor knitters in the city. The document is unique to England, and covers around a quarter of the native English-born population of Norwich. The problem of supporting and controlling the poor concerned both the local and national authorities in Elizabethan England. Relief for the poor occurred in many places before the Elizabethan Poor Law was enacted in 1597/8. A few places produced a survey of their poor, listing who they were, and often providing other details about them, and this is by far the largest of those that have survived. Norwich was the second city in England in this period, with a population of 12,000–15,000. The…

FOR MANY years there has been an ongoing debate about issues of diversity, representation and racism in the knitting and crochet community. This conversation reached a crescendo on Instagram in 2018 with people of colour sharing their individual, often painful experiences of racism and exclusion within the crafting world. With these issues finally being openly discussed, some of the community began asking yarn companies to adopt anti-racist practices in order to bring about changes that would make the community more inclusive - something lasting and positive. One starting point was by exploring which knit and crochet designers people were following. Another was to look at who was being featured in magazines and patterns.
