HOME FARM in the English Cotswolds sits on 150 acres of ancient ridge-and-furrow farmland. There has been a farm on this site for many centuries–Home Farm was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. The current farmstead was almost derelict when it was bought by Jayne Dryden in 2006. Since then, Jayne and her husband Steve have renovated the farmhouse and established their flock of Wensleydale sheep. Their business, Home Farm Wensleydales, sells hand-knitting yarns in a range of weights, and supplies fleece to hand-spinners. We asked Jayne to tell us her story. LIKE AN English meadow in summer, this blanket design combines soft green textures with a scattering of flower motifs. ENTRELAC KNITTING ENTRELAC knitting is an old technique that’s little used today. It consists of working diamond-shaped blocks to give a fabric with an almost woven appearance, and was popular among Norwegian knitters. Now, Norwegian designers (and sisters) Mette Hovden and Heidi Eikeland want to share their love of entrelac through their book of 40 attractive projects. Entrelac has a reputation for being a difficult technique; however, the designers use the Norwegian variation, where you always work with the right side facing. They explain the basic principles of this method in the first chapter, and detailed instructions with photo illustrations show how to work the different entrelac blocks, including full, half-horizontal and half-vertical blocks. A SEWN cast-off is an ideal method to use if you want a stretchy edge for your knitting. It’s useful for casting off toe-up socks, and also for brioche stitch. The swatch for our step-by step instructions has been worked in two-colour brioche, so the sl1yo (consisting of a stitch with a yarn over sitting on top) has been treated as a single stitch, as in step 6. WORKING FROM her studio in the garden of her home in a small village in rural Pembrokeshire, where she lives with her dog, Flynn, silversmith Lyn Roberts rejoices in the fact she can work anytime she wishes.
