Lately I don’t seem to have the time, energy or motivation to tackle any big projects, although I still want to do a bit of knitting in the evenings, so I’ve decided to cast on a little project from Kate Davies’ 10 Years in the Making collection. I’ve chosen ‘Bieldy’, a cosy colourwork slipper design, as I always have cold feet! I’m expecting this toe-up project to be very entertaining. I love to knit Fair Isle, and this design pairs a Nordic star motif on the tops with a neat diamond grid pattern on the soles. BASED ON Shetland, Viveka Velupillai is a professor of linguistics who has studied languages including Hawai’i Creole and the Shetland dialect. She lives at Uradale Farm, the home of organic yarn company Uradale Yarns, and she has designed many knitting patterns using the brand’s organic native Shetland wools. STRANDS OF JOY THIS BOOK has been flying off the shelves of yarn shops since it was published, and with good reason: it’s a simply stunning collection of stranded colourwork projects. Finnish designer Anna Johanna has filled her debut book with sophisticated colour palettes, elegant details, and wearable shapes. It’s stylishly presented, too, in a cloth-bound, hardback format. The collection offers 20 projects for sweaters and cardigans, a hat, a dress, and a child’s pullover. All the women’s patterns are sized up to at least a 62in bust. As you’d expect, a significant number of the designs involve knitting in the round and steeking. IF YOU’VE knitted a project in the round and then cut it open with a steek, you’ll be left with a raw cut edge. These are typically hidden on the inside of the project – for example, if you’ve picked up stitches along the cut edge of a cardigan to attach buttonbands – but many knitters don’t like the untidiness of an unfinished steek edge, even if no one else will ever see it! To mark the arrival of spring, West Yorkshire Spinners has added gorgeous new shades to its Exquisite range. The design team at Brooklyn Tweed has been exploring texture, shape, colour and line for its latest collection, which contains five modern, unisex knitting patterns. Among the designs is ‘Otte’, designed by Jared Flood using the company’s Shelter yarn. It’s a seamless sweater with a stranded colourwork pattern of diamonds around the yoke, and comes in a wide range of sizes from 36in-76in chests.
