Q I know I should knit a tension square before casting on a new project, but I’ve never done one! Any tips on how to go about it? A To make a square to check your tension, use the same yarn and needles as your project, and knit a square at least 15cm by 15cm. Pin it out to a padded surface such as a firm cushion or a foam blocking mat. To work out the stitch tension, use a pin as a marker and insert it vertically between two stitches. Then, using a rigid ruler, horizontally measure 10cm and place another pin in the fabric. THE CERAMICS company Arabia holds a special place in the hearts of Finnish people. Founded in 1873, the company has produced tableware for generations of Finnish families, and many of these much-loved designs are still available today. Likewise, the yarn brand Novita has had a long relationship with Finnish families, and its Nordic yarns have been popular for 90 years. These two famous brands teamed up recently to produce a knitting pattern collection celebrating the best of Finland’s design and yarn heritage. The book, Arabia x Novita Sukkalehti, contains more than 40 sock designs, in which favourite motifs from Arabia’s ceramics have been translated into colourwork designs worked in yarn. A SOCK is an ideal blank canvas for early steps in knitwear designing. Toe and heel aside, it’s essentially a straight tube, perfect for showing off any yarn or stitch pattern. You can keep things very simple, or include complicated cables or lace. The pattern simply has to work around the tube of the leg, then split in half at the heel to continue down the top of the foot. INSPIRATION Inspiration in sock design often comes from one of two main sources: the yarn or a stitch pattern.
