Locking stitch markers are placed in stitches halfway and at the end of each repeat (centre of KyoKyoK and Dec4 sts) during cast-on to help keep track of changes of direction. KNITTING PATTERNS often give only the most basic instructions for creating buttonholes, and the results can sometimes look rather messy. What is most important is to know which type of buttonhole will be best for your garment, and here we look at a range of options, from eyelet buttonholes to vertical and one-row styles. SIMPLE EYELET BUTTONHOLE An eyelet buttonhole is the most commonly used buttonhole. It creates a small hole, with a soft edge. This makes it very stretchy, so if working it in your garment, ensure that the buttons you select are a fair amount larger than the hole or they will slip out easily. Due to the lack of a firm edge, the simple eyelet buttonhole method is best suited to lighter yarns and smaller needles. In…

PATTERN NOTES The front and back are identical and worked sideways from the centre crochet cast-on. Once the first section is complete, stitches are picked up along the cast-on edge, forming a chain-like seam, then the second section is worked from the centre out to the sleeve end. This is my ‘Starflake’, a shawl design from Stephen West, which I knitted in Cat & Sparrow Oh So Fine 4ply in shades Sorceress and PistachiOMG. This is a super-drapey mix of Bluefaced Leicester and silk, so it’s warm, soft and shiny. What more could you ask for in a shawl? I love Stephen West’s designs – I think he’s an absolute genius with shaping and stitch combinations. He’s inventive and loves to experiment, so I end up learning a huge amount when I knit his patterns. I do love his mystery knit-alongs, which run every year in September and October, but it takes me many months to finish them as I’m not a particularly fast knitter. I’m in these for the long haul! I really enjoyed knitting this one…

MY ZIGGURAT project is finished! I’m so pleased with the fit, the style and the look of it, and I can’t wait to wear it. Of course, part of the design is that it is seamless, so there are literally no seams to sew up, just the yarn ends to sew in. I like to sew the ends in by weaving through the back of the stitches on the inside. I usually go up and down, rather than along the stitches, because this seems to give a neater finish on the right side of the knitting. When I joined in a new ball of yarn I used the end of the current ball of yarn, and the start of the new one, and knitted alternate stitches. I would usually join…

CONSTRUCTION NOTES This sweater is worked flat in one piece. The first sleeve is worked from cuff to shoulder, then stitches are cast on either side of the sleeve for the front and back, and the body is worked from hem to hem, working in two separate sections in the middle to create the neck opening. Finally, the front and back stitches are cast off leaving the stitches for the second sleeve, which is worked from shoulder to cuff.
