IF YOU’RE a machine knitter, you may have heard of tuck stitches. If you are solely a hand-knitter, you’re less likely to be familiar with the concept. In this article, I’m going to explore some of the features of this fantastic, endlessly adaptable technique, and look at how you can use it to explore different textures in your knitting. I must start by mentioning Nancy Marchant’s seminal book on this topic – Tuck Stitches: Sophistication in Handknitting. EMMA VINING’S lovely ‘Glenfinnan’ design is knitted in Fabulous, the hand-dyed British wool-silk blend from the artisan brand Mc Intosh, based in south-east London. Hand-dyer James Mc Intosh is the creative force behind the brand, and 2023 has been a busy year for him, and has included a TEDx Talk, and live knitting events on TikTok. We caught up with James to find out more about his recent work. Sarah Hatton Sarah honed her skills as part of Rowan’s in-house design team, and she is now an independent designer who creates patterns for knitting magazines and yarn brands. Sarah’s latest design for us is a cardigan with decorative stitch patterns, on page 24. Bronagh Miskelly Designer, writer and technical editor Bronagh has had her designs published in a range of magazines, and is closely involved with the UK Hand Knitting Association. Designer Sarah Hatton has collaborated with West Yorkshire Spinners to curate brand-new shades for its The Croft Shetland wool yarn. Inspired by Shetland landscapes, she has developed six warm hues for the Aran range, and six lighter, chalky shades for the DK. Sarah showcases these colours in her new pattern collection, A Way of Life. The 12 knits for men, women and children have been designed for everyday comfort, and have a heritage look. There’s a cabled sweater for men, for example, a textured gansey and cabled hoody for children, and a coatigan for women featuring a richly cabled fabric.
