Brands can now choose to source traceable wool, paying the farmers an additional top-up payment. FARMER IDENTIFICATION Labels are delivered with the woolsheets direct to the farm with a unique document number. GRADING Each fleece is hand graded and sorted into skeps of similar quality wools. Each skep has a unique data card. DATA CAPTURE After grading the wool is weighed, scanned and recorded against their membership number. PATTERN NOTES All chart rounds are worked from right to left. The garment is knitted in the round to the armholes; armhole stitches are slipped onto stitch holders or waste yarn, and stitches are cast on to form a steek so the garment can continue to be knitted in the round. This makes it easier to keep the motif patterns aligned. The garment is then worked in the round to the neckline, where centre neck stitches are put on hold with stitches cast on for a steek. SIZING NOTES To choose a size: use the shawl width to determine where on your arms you want the ‘sleeves’ to end. Bust circumference is less important than where you want the garment to fall on your arms. The shawligan will drop down your back with the shoulder seams falling on your back shoulders. This means that the front of the garment will look much shorter than the back, and the fronts will have a ‘waterfall’ effect. For a longer or shorter garment, work fewer or more rows. When did you learn to knit? “I first learnt to knit at secondary school - it was part of our education to learn basic cooking and mending skills, including knitting. PATTERN NOTES The 1x1 corrugated rib used in the brim is well known for curling up. Knitting each stitch through the back of the loop in Round 1 should help stop this from happening. If it still does curl, try a different cast-on method or a stickier yarn. An alternative cast-on we would recommend is the Twisted German (or Old Norwegian) cast-on. This is based on the long-tail method but involves an extra twist in the long-tail yarn (held around the thumb) to create a deeper and firmer cast-on edge.
