Kate Davies’s latest pattern collection was inspired by one of her favourite authors, the British detective fiction writer Margery Allingham. Filled with inventive constructions and techniques, and design details evoking the 1920s and ’30s, the book is a delightful homage to this influential author. The book has 13 knitting projects, including a spectacular modular shawl called ‘The Goff Place Mystery’, and a two-tone cardigan using a multi-directional construction. Two ingenious striped designs, ‘The Tiger in the Smoke’ tee and ‘The Gallivant’ cardigan, are worked from side to side with short-row shaping. The ‘Fitton’s Dynamo’ top can be knitted with or without a central ‘lightning bolt’ cable, and the ‘Tansy Tisane’ lace jumper comes in short and long-sleeved versions. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself? “Hello! I am Weichien (known as thepetiteknitter in the digital world of knitting). I am a knitwear designer based in the Arctic archipelago of Nunavut in Canada. “I first learned to knit during Christmas 2015 and really started getting into the craft in 2017. I decided to dive in at the deep end and started designing right away, as I had a very specific colourwork design in mind that I wanted. I haven’t looked back since then!” How would you describe your design style? “I love and specialise in colourwork. I’d say my style is classic with a whimsical twist using earthy tones and colours. THE GERMAN yarn brand Hey Mama Wolf was founded in 2015 by Jule Kebelmann, a hand-dyer who wanted to work with locally produced wool and share it with knitters across Germany and beyond. Today, the company has stockists in the UK, Iceland, the Netherlands, Switzerland and France, as well as Germany. Its gorgeous yarns include Mokosh and Skadi, spun from super-soft Merino d’Arles wool. Jule is also a knitwear designer who has contributed patterns to collections from Erika Knight, John Arbon Textiles and PomPom Quarterly. THIS BRIOCHE design by Lisa R Myers showcases two DK-weight yarns from Manos del Uruguay. Marla is made from two strands of yarn that have been dyed separately and then plied together; when worked, Marla creates a marled fabric. Sami, the semi-solid sister to Marla, has a palette of 11 coordinating colours. In Lisa’s design, brioche ribs change colour in a swirl around a simple cowl, letting one tweedy colour of Marla share the spotlight with a semi-solid Sami. “RHIANNON WAS a great queen from Welsh mythology, and this dramatic hap shawl is named in her honour,” explains Kath Andrews. “It uses a traditional hap shawl construction, beginning with the central square, from which stitches are picked up all around to work the two borders. YOUNG DESIGNER Lucy George, who created the fabulous 'Plaid Up' sweater, is currently studying for a degree in Fashion Knitwear. But she’s no stranger to design, having collaborated with British designer Jacinta Bowie for a number of years. We chatted with Lucy about her design adventures. When did you first learn to knit and crochet, and who taught you? "I taught myself to knit and crochet when I was ten.
